I was really sorry to hear that Larry was no longer with us. I liked him a lot and respected him even more. I knew Larry during high school, but I really got to know him well during the years we worked together at Bashas'. I was the new guy, and on top of that a would be "professional college boy". Larry would't allow that to continue. He insisted I become a real "grocery guy". And he frequently checked on my progress. He pulled no punches when I failed to "get it". He was absolutely serious about the business.
Yes, as far as the grocery business goes, he was mature beyond his years. A true professional, he was destined for future management positions. Larry insisted I be professional as well. He taught me how to unload trailers, order milk for the dairy box, rotate perishable items, manicure shelves, move quickly from task to task - and to run when a cashier called for help. He also took me golfing with the boys, explained the true virtues of Chevy cars and worried if I did not have a girl friend. Wait. I guess his wife, Carla, used to worry about that. Larry definitely made my job (and my life) a whole lot more enjoyable.
I sure wish I would have kept in touch with Larrry and Carla after he left Bashas'. They were a great couple who have a terrific daughter, Amanda. I'll miss you Larry. And though I'm now retired, I still have a habit of rotating the milk while I shop for it. You trained me well.
