Salvatore Catalano, 70, of South Scranton, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Sept. 26, at Geisinger CMC. His wife of 49 years is the former Ruth Macavage.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Hugo and Yola Lilli Catalano.
Sal was a graduate of Scranton Central High School and attended Penn State University. During the Vietnam War, Sal served as a staff sergeant stationed in Germany in the Air Force. He was employed in the insurance industry for over 30 years before retiring from Met Life. He was also a ski instructor at Montage Mountain, an Eagle Scout and a Scoutmaster.
His love for his family was tremendous, but his pride and joy were his granddaughters. He was always present at Erika's softball games to support and photograph her and her teammates. He also loved to talk about, share and support Samantha's artwork.
Sal was an avid fan of the Yankees, Seahawks and PSU football. His love for sci-fi and collecting led him to co-own a comic book store with his brother, Robert. He enjoyed retirement to the fullest, spending his time at antique shops in search of airplanes, flying memorabilia and other treasures. He also loved collecting Hallmark ornaments, which he used to adorn his many Christmas trees. Sal had many passions in life, but he was happiest while playing Scrabble on the patio, solving the Sunday crossword puzzle, taking a ride in his convertible, enjoying a fresh martini, and sharing the fire-pit with the love of his life, his wife, Ru-Ru.
He is also survived by two daughters, Christine Mackie and husband, Drew; and Wendy Catalano Schraner and husband, Scott, all of Scranton; two granddaughters, Erika Mackie, of Buffalo, N.Y.; and Samantha Schraner, of Scranton; a brother, Robert Catalano and wife, Linda, Garden City, Mich.; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Chipper.
The funeral will be Monday with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Mary, Mother of God Parish at Holy Rosary Church, 316 William St., Scranton, celebrated by the Rev. Cyril Edwards, pastor, followed by entombment at Italian American Cemetery Mausoleum. Military honors will be provided by AMVETS Honor Guard of Post 189, Greater Pittston.
Friends may call Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Neil W. Regan Funeral Home Inc., 1900 Pittston Ave., Scranton.
The family requests that those attending the funeral on Monday go directly to the church.

Sad to read of Sal's passing. Like myself, he was in the group that came to Central in our Junior year. Sal was in the band at South Scranton and at Central playing the Sousaphone, and as noted in the obit, also a Boy Scout.
I will always remember Sal as an all around good guy. I still recall his laugh.

Sal and I were neighbors and good friends from grade school through high school and for years after. He had a great personality, always a smile and a laugh, an all-around good guy. He will be sorely missed.

As Chick Costanzi mentioned we were part of of group from South Scranton who walked to school for many years together. We all met at James A. Garfield Elementary and later went to South Scranton Junior High and then on to Central High School. Sal was a close neighbor and we got to know each other along with several others. I counted Sal as a friend and I was saddened to hear of his passing. Rest In Peace buddy.
