Halem Hazzouri

A spokesman for the Detroit Police Bureau said Saturday night that "two and possibly three white suspects" are being sought in the fatal shooting of Halem Hazzouri Jr., 24, and the critical wounding of his companion, Thomas Roe, 25, of St. Joseph, Mich., early Saturday morning.

The shooting took place outside the Sewer Bar at 1:30 a.m. and Hazzouri, son of Halem and Sophie Matuszewski Hazzouri, Moscow, RD, died at 3:01 a.m. in Detroit Central Hospital, Central Branch. Roe was undergoing treatment in the same hospital. Both were students at the University of Detroit School of Law and resided in the same apartment building.

The spokesman said that information on hand was that the victims had been involved in a pool game in the cafe with two unknown suspects and a fight later outside the cafe resulted in "someone not paying a bet on the pool game".

Mr. Hazzouri was the grandson of the late Abraham J. Hazzouri, a fruit distributor in this area who died in 1951, and the late Millie Hazzouri, who died in 1968. Other survivors are two sisters, Paula, San Francisco, Calif.; Jemille, a student at East Stroudsburg State College, and a brother, Abraham, at home.

The funeral will be Tuesday from the Charles Zabielski Funeral Home, 1226-28 Prospect Ave., with a Mass in St. Ann's Maronite Church at 10 a.m. The body will be placed in the family mausoleum, in Cathedral Cemetery. Viewing, Monday 2 to 4, 7 to 9 p.m.

The student body at Detroit Law School has established a memorial fund in Mr. Hazzouri's name.

Two memorial Masses are scheduled at the school next week, with the Bishop of Detroit celebrating on of them. Several classmates of the victim, including class president Joseph Kasmala, will attend services in this city.
