Lawrence B. Jackson, 77, of Wellsboro, passed away Sunday May 18, 2025 at UPMC Williamsport. He was born August 5, 1947, in Philadelphia to Gustave and Sara (Ginsberg) Jackson. Raised in Scranton, he graduated from Central High School. On November 12, 1971, he married Mary Ann Mays with whom he shared 53 years of marriage. Larry served his country in the US Army from July, 1966, to February 1969. When the North Koreans captured the USS Pueblo, that service took him to Korea’s Demilitarized Zone, and later he worked for the military’s independent news source Stars and Stripes.
That experience led him to a career where he worked at United Press International and later as an Associate Editor for Parade Magazine, both in New York City. When Larry moved south, he became the City Editor of the Knoxville News Sentinel and held that position for many years. He and his wife owned and operated different businesses through the years. He served his community in Knoxville working as a Knoxville County Deputy Sherriff until moving to Wellsboro in 2010 to care for family.

This article is a glowing trivute to a fascinating life of national service and innovative and progressive links to a successful career and family. He did success to CHS and everything/everyone surrounding him. My sentiments to his family and friends for his loss.

Short anecdote about Larry to add some color to the understated note in his obituary about the different businesses he had over the years. In the late 1970s Larry and Mary Ann were staying with us on vacation for a few days at our home in California. Larry was still working for the newspaper in Knoxville, but he told me about a little side business he had importing and selling weight equipment. His biggest sale to date was to the University of Tennessee football program. One morning the phone rings, my wife answers, and hands the phone to Larry. The caller was Arnold Schwarzenegger (pre-Hollywood), whose sole film appearance at that time was in the documentary Pumping Iron. The fact that Larry had given the most famous bodybuilder in the world his vacation itinerary and our phone number on vacation says something about his entrepreneurial ambition, instinct, and moxie.
Rest in peace old buddy!
