Joan Paulauskas (Stoneham)

Joan Stoneham died December 15, 2023. She was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania. She attended and graduated from Mulenberg School of Nursing in Plainfield, New Jersey as an RN. She worked in emergency room and critical care nursing in New Jersey and Florida for over 30 years until she retired to the North Georgia mountains. She spent the next 23 years teaching basket weaving on all levels. She also enjoyed teaching at different art schools including the famous John Campell Folk School in Warne, North Carolina and the William Holland Lapidary School in Young Harris, Georgia to name a few. She even taught at her studio in Hiawassee, Georgia along with instructing at various art institutions and galleries in many different states.

Joan was also known for her hunting prowess, having hunted dangerous game including alligators, wild boar, and black bears in the wilds of Maine and Florida.

Joan is survived by her husband of 50 years, Rob Stoneham; son, Shane Stoneham (Dovanna); grandson, Case Stoneham; and sister, Rose Christian.

Joan was a famous and accomplished artist whom after 40 years of basket weaving and painting experience and instruction, leaves hundred and hundreds of students and good friends in three states.

Services have not been planned at this time.

So sorry to hear about Joan's passing.  I knew Joan at North Scranton Junior High thru Central High.  It sounds like Joan had a wonderful, talented life.  Rest in peace.

I met Joan at Wm Holland where I also teach making chain maille jewelry. I did not realize that she and I had attended school together for 6 years. Her age and birthplace sent me on a genealogical search (with several friends) to find out how closely our lives had paralleled each other in our teen years. Although I did not know her at North Scranton or Central, I wished we both could have reminisced about the common youth we shared.

Sorry to hear about Joan's passing.  We were friends at North Scranton and Central.  We lost contact after graduation.  Prayers to Joan's family.
