Anthony Powell

Anthony J. Powell, 54, of Spring Brook Township, a former Minooka section resident, died Saturday at home from cardiovascular complications after a lengthy illness.

Born Aug. 6, 1948, in Minooka, son of the late Joan Emily Hopgood Powell and attorney James J. Powell Jr., he was a 1969 graduate of the University of Scranton premedical program, earning a bachelor of science degree in biology. He was employed as a chemical technician for the Chemseco division of the Ford Motor Co., Kansas City, Mo. He later worked at the Davis Convalescent Hospital, Davis, Calif., and the Newhall Land and Farm Corp., Chico, Calif., before returning to the Scranton area.

He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Moscow, and St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Scranton.

A loving and devoted brother and uncle, he was an accomplished fly fisherman and musician. He was recently presented with the service award from the Northeastern Pennsylvania Veterans Center for donating more than 1,400 hours in volunteer service. He will be truly missed by all whose lives he touched.

Surviving are four brothers, attorney James J. III, Spring Brook Township; Richard J. and Christopher J., both of Scranton, and John D., Sterling; 10 nieces and nephews, and cousins.

A Eucharist of the Resurrection will be conducted Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 231 Wyoming Ave., by the Rev. Howard Stringfellow, pastor. Service of committal will be in St. Luke's Columbarium.

Friends may call Thursday, 9:30 to 10 a.m., at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Northeastern Veterans Center, Residents Welfare Fund, 401 Penn Ave., 18503.
