Hortense Shurtleff

Hortense Shurtleff, 88, a resident of Roaring Brook Twp. for more than 50 years, died Thursday at home.

Born on Nov. 1, 1926, in Cleveland, Ohio, daughter of the late Buford and Elizabeth (Small) Shurtleff, she was a graduate of Central High School, Marywood College and the University of Scranton. For 41 years, she taught Latin and mathematics at Central High School.

Horty was both an avid golfer and bridge player, and enjoyed sharing her enthusiasm and knowledge of both with friends. She will be missed tremendously by the many friends she leaves behind.

We would like to thank Nerissa and Jeanna for their loving care of Horty and to also thank Chris, Lois, Annie and the inpatient staff at Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their knowledge, compassion and care of Horty during her final months.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on May 5 at 10 a.m. at St. Eulalia Parish, 214 Blue Shutters Road, Roaring Brook Twp., to be celebrated by Monsignor John W. Jordan.

Visitation will be from 9 until the time of the Mass. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Covington Twp.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Friends of the Poor, 148 Meridian Ave., Scranton, PA 18504.
