Edwin Neice - Class Of 1957 VIEW PROFILE

Brud’s family and their garage by the corner of Glen and Roslyn Avenues was a fixture of our time in Sea Cliff and Brud’s roots were deep.  He grew into the community he loved.  The strongest and most central civic organization in Sea Cliff has always been its volunteer fire department, and Brud rose through the ranks.  As the Class of ’57 convened in the fire house for the first session of its 51st reunion, Brud’s familiar face looked over the class from the gallery of former fire chiefs.

His sister Carol (Neice) Snayd wrote of him:

Brud was a true Sea Cliffite.  He lived for this mile square village.  Brud touched the lives of many people.  He served as chief of the Sea Cliff Fire Department, (his picture was on the wall where your class gathered on the first night of the 51st reunion).  He was also chief of the Sea Cliff Auxiliary Police Department.  He gave 100% to anything he did.

Brud enjoyed fishing for relaxation, locally and at Montauk Point where he vacationed almost every year with his family.

Most local residences knew Brud as manager of Frank’s Beer And Soda in Glen Cove, where he worked for 38 years.  He started making deliveries while in high school.  He was also an owner of K C Gallaghers (the Old Pine Tree Bar and Grill, better known as “Mom Longo’s”)  That was always his passion to own a bar and he made it come true.

Brud, of course, was also dedicated to his family, his wife Peggy and his children Elain and Kenny.  Local journalist and historian Carol Griffin (’56) reported that “Kenny’s receiving his pilot’s license made Brud swell with pride and tears formed in his eyes the first time he saw Kenny fly.”

Brud died February 18, 1997 at age 58.At a Sea Cliff Fire Department service after Brud’s death, his daughter Elaine said she was very proud to have “followed in his footsteps” and become a firefighter.  Over 100 firefighters from Sea Cliff and neighboring departments attended his funeral.  At his funeral mass Father Michael Torpey of St. Boniface summed up his place in Sea Cliff saying, “Brud was a part of everyone’s life.”
