I had heard Walter was killed in Nam, don't know what year, but I assume it was the late 60's...although,looked for his name on "the wall" in Washington and did not see it.
Will try to get over to the Wall and look for him (I work in DC)...his mom was a secretary in the Guidance Office, as I recall, wasn't she? Seems I remember her as being very kind and sweet...
Walter never made it to Viet Nam,he was in the Air Force and the aircraft that he was on crashed into the South China Sea. Neither the plane nor any bodies were ever recovered. This was in 1969. This is what was in the old Mid-Island news. I also met Walter's sister, and she had said the same thing.
In reading the "Walter Hailand" remarks, I see that Robert Cammaroto works in D.C. and was going to check out the Viet Nam wall. As Ed Terrafirma said , and contrary to rumors that I have heard many years ago, that Walter died in Viet Nam, he did not. However , if the plane downing in the South China Sea was associated with the Viet Nam war....maybe his name is on the wall. Having left the Long Island area many years ago, I too work in D.C. Never got to the wall, but I will !! After GOOGLING his name it is sad to see that the Newfield Alumni site and a chapter of the D.A.V. in Ronkonkoma named for Walter are my only finds !!??!! Is there a tribute to him ( and John Jones) at Newfield ??
Steve, I was at the DC wall and saw John Jones listed there. It said he was special forces. My husband was in Nam. He was on those Huey helicopters (aviation division) It was a hard time for many. So glad that is all in the past. Be well. Joan Manias (Gyulay)
