Mark Culbreath Jennings

Folly Beach

Mark Culbreath Jennings, 49, of Folly Beach, died Monday, March 23, 2009, after a courageous battle with kidney cancer.

Born in Newberry, he was the son of Henry Edmond "Jack" Jennings Sr. and the late Coleman Jennings of Newberry. A graduate of Seneca High School (1977) and Clemson University (1981), he was employed by Duke Energy for 21 years, where he worked with the Oconee Nuclear Station and most recently with the McGuire Nuclear Station.

Mark is survived by his wife, Gracen; and son, Cooper of the home; and sons, Kevin and Trevor Jennings of Jensen Beach, Fla.; his father; brothers, Edmond (Sue) Jennings of Weymouth, Mass. and George (Lisa) Jennings of Winston-Salem, N.C.; sister, Jacqueline Anne Jennings of Taylors, S.C.; and a host of nieces and nephews. He is also survived by special friends, Dale and Karen Hammond of Jensen Beach, Fla.

Mark will be remembered for his quick-witted sense of humor and his devotion to his wife and sons. He was happiest just spending time with family and friends. His best times were had while watching Clemson football, playing golf and eating barbecue.

A memorial service will be held 4:30 p.m. Friday at James Island Christian Church, 12 Sawgrass Road, Charleston, followed by a barbecue reception with the family to celebrate Mark's life.

In lieu of flowers, Mark requested that donations be made to Livestrong.org or Hospice of Charleston.

Arrangements are by McAlister-Smith Funeral Home, West Ashley Chapel. Online condolences may be left at mcalister-smith.com

I haven't seen Mark since high school--about 32 years--but I remember him as a good-natured friend. I was excited to re-aquaint with him through this website, and had no idea he was having health problems. We exchanged a couple of emails about us both working for Duke Energy, and I said that I hoped he would be at the reunion. His reply on February 28, 2009 was, "Unfortunately I will not be able to attend due to health reasons. I truly am bummed about it. Have a great time and have one on me.

Thanks, Mark."

The class of '77 will certainly miss Mark. He was instrumental in making our 10 year reunion at the Holiday Inn a success. He was the "money man" and took care of all the finances for us. He was a wonderful friend and I am glad I had a chance to catch up with him again just recently after all these years. My heart goes out to his family! What a great Seneca guy from Adam's subdivision and St. Mark church! Good times we had!

I was not personally acquainted with Mark but do remember him from high school (as an awesome basketball player) as well as from working on the job site with him at Oconee Nuclear Station. I always noted him to have a quiet, reserved and peaceful spirit. I was also acquainted with his dear mother, the late Mrs. Coleman Jennings, who also worked at the plant.

My heartfelt sympathy goes to Mark's family. I'm regretful that he won't be able to attend the SHS 76-80 reunion as I understand he wanted to attend. However, I'm content with knowing that he's at a Grander Reunion now around God's throne.

My condolences to the Jennings family. I remember Mark for his easy smile. I also remember that he was the only one of the Jennings children who had brown hair. At this time, I know the family is comforted in the knowledge that Mark is resting in a better place and that he is with his beloved mother. Peace and God's blessing to this family and all who will cherish the memory of this kind and gentle man.

Mark was one of my brother's best friends in high school..... always a good guy....and a really good basketball player. He was always more on the quieter side with my brother, Chris, Mark Gibson and that crowd.

Sometimes it is sad that we wait till something like this happens to make us realize just how short life really is and that we all wished we would have said more beforehand.... Let it serve as a reminder to love those in your life and all of our friends everyday.

I was sorry to hear about Mark's passing. Mark and I had communicated on this site in late January. Like someone else said, you hate that time goes by and we do not take time to visit or even communicate with friends. Mark and I were pretty close in school. His mom and my dad were in the school business together. I pray that God be with his family and our thoughts are with you.

I just recently connected with this site and I am saddened by the loss of our classmate and colleague, Mark Jennings. My heart goes out to his family. I had the pleasure of knowing and graduating with Mark in school and working with him while at Duke Power. He will be greatly missed. God Bless!
