Mark David Crew - Class of 1979

Mark David Crew
August 19, 1961 - June 10, 2008

Mark David Crew, Ph.D., of Little Rock passed away on June 10 after a valiantly fought battle against cancer. His wonderful sense of humor remained intact to the very end. Mark was employed as an Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). He loved to fish and play the guitar. Mark was an excellent researcher and well liked by his students. He was born in Lawton, OK on Aug. 19, 1961. Mark received a B.S. degree in biochemistry from Virginia Tech in 1983 and a Ph.D. degree in biochemistry from the University of California at Riverside in 1987. Although he spent only 46 short years on this earth, he touched the lives of many people.

Of his many accomplishments, Mark excelled at being a dad. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Patty and sons Joe, Kyle, and Michael; mother, Sheila Crew (Glen Burnie, MD); father, David Crew and wife Patty (Harrisburg, PA); grandparents Vern and Lotus Marten (Plano, TX); sister, Michelle (Chris) Freeman of Pinckney, MI; brother, Myles (Nikki) Crew (Seattle, WA); nieces and nephews, Chloe and Reece Freeman, Sarah and Brett Kitson, Taylor and Soren Vitarelli; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Mark will also be greatly missed by his mother-in-law, Nancy Wight and sisters-in-law, Susan (Steve) Kitson and Pam Vitarelli. The family would like to thank Dr. Anne Marie Maddox for her unwavering care of Mark during his illness.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Arkansas Cancer Research Center at UAMS or Christ the King Catholic Church.
