Richard Cain - Class Of 1963

Richard Hyland Cain

b. 1945 in Shelton, WA d. 18 Apr. 1968 at his home in Union from congenital heart failure according to his sister Mrs. Richard (Marlene ) Bostrom of Olympia. Her words on Richard's life follows: Richard Cain was born April 29, 1945 in Shelton, WA to Harold R. and Neva G. Cain (Neva Hunter after Harold's death in 1965). He joined an older sister, Marlene, 14 years his senior. When he was a year old he moved to Union with his family. In infantcy he was diagnosed with a severe congenital heart condition and was never able to participate in strenuous activities. Despite his handicap he always had a wonderful outlook on life. he never complained and had a great sense of humor. He started school at the Skokomish Grade School (Lower Skokomish Elementary) and attended the upper grades in Shelton. After graduation from Shelton High School (1963) he attended Olympic Junior College in Bremerton for almost two years and worked summers at the Washington State Library in Olympia. His interests included raising tropical fish, listening to music, playing the guitar, and fishing. He was a good at tying flies to fish with and many of these flies have become family heirlooms. His heart condition continued to worsen throughout his life and Richard passed away April 18, 1968, at his home in Union. He was buried in the family plot at Masonic Memorial Park in Olympia. OBITUARY: Mason County Journal Apr 25, 1968 Union man, 22, Dies at Home. Richard Hyland Cain, 22, died at his home at Star Rt. 1, Box 225, Union, April 17. He was born in Shelton and attended Shelton High School and Olympic Junior College. He worked a short while in the State Library in Olympia. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Harold (Neva) Cain, of Union, and a sister, Mrs. Robert (Marlene) Bostrom, of Olympia. Services were under the direction of Mills and Mills Funeral Home, Olympia.
