Elson "Fred" Mackey III
EAST MORICHES _ Elson Frederick "Fred" Mackey III, 60, of East Moriches, Long Island, and formerly of Sidney, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009, at North Adams Regional Hospital, North Adams, Mass., while vacationing in Greylock, Mass.
Fred was born on March 22, 1949, the first son of Elson Mackey Jr. and Dorothy (Paige) Mackey. He graduated from Sidney High School in 1967. Fred drove tractor-trailer for Mayflower and worked at several area car dealerships as parts manager.
He is survived by his mother, Dorothy Mackey of Bainbridge; longtime companion, Margaret Szmidt of East Moriches; daughter, Sharlene and Jim Robinson of Ithaca; two sons, Richard Mackey of Binghamton and Patrick Mackey of Windsor; four grandchildren; brother, Jeffrey and Mary Jane Mackey of Unadilla; sisters, Sandra Bailey of Melbourne, Fla., Cynthia and Robert Hall of Sidney, Tina Mackey of Binghamton, Bonnie George of Sidney and Lisa Murphy of Downsville; as well as 16 nieces and nephews.
Fred was predeceased by his father, "Mack," and his brothers Rusty Mackey, Donald Mackey and Dennis Paige.
Friends are invited to call from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral chapel.
Burial will be private, at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Fred's name may be directed to the charity of one's choice.
