Martin "Mick" Given Obituary

Martin “Mick” Given, 69, of Sidney, passed away Wednesday, February 4, 2026 at the Atrium Medical center in Middletown, Oh. He was born February 4, 1957 in Sidney, Ohio. He is son of the late Thomas Given and Marvalene “Mivi” (Sprague) Given.

Mick is survived by his wife, who was his high school sweetheart, Vickie (Jones) Given; his son, Brent (Julie) Given and their children, Breanne, Jackson and Charlotte; his daughter, Jackie (Given) Shaffer and children, Kendall, Kherington, Kapri and Jayven; his daughter, Leslie Given; his brother, Dale (Mary Shannon) Given; a niece and nephew; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by one brother, Ralph Joseph Given.

He graduated from Sidney High School in 1975 and got his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering in 1979 from the University of Dayton. Mick was a longtime president of Ferguson Construction Company and became CEO in 2018. For nearly 5 decades, his leadership fueled growth and advanced transformation across the industry.

Mick strived to improve area communities, especially those in Shelby County. He was a founder of MSGA development, which has spearheaded significant commercial developments.  He was on the investment committee for Wilson Health Hospital and a part of the 2003 stadium campaign committee and donor. In 2015 he was the Zenith Award Winner, received the 2015 OVABC legacy award, and was inducted into the 2017 hall of honor for Sidney City Schools. He was a board chairman of Sidney-Shelby County Workforce Partnership, which promoted trades to the next generation of Shelby County residents in the construction industry. Mick was part of the YMCA foundation committee and board president for a number of years. He was a board chairman of The Associated Builders and Contractors (represented all 3 chapters) and appointed to the Governors executive workforce board and board chairman of Sidney-Shelby County Economic partnership.

Make no mistake, Mick was not all work and no play. His radiant smile and fun personality lit up a room. He truly loved life to the fullest and always wanted to bring friends and family along for adventures. He was always busy planning to make more memories. Mick was a passionate fan of the Dayton Flyers and his Ohio State Buckeyes. He was a member of the Piqua Country Club, Sidney Moose Lodge and Naples Sail & Yacht Club in Naples, Florida.

Mick grew up boating at Lake Cumberland and continued those traditions at Norris Lake where countless memories were made. From the lake to the Florida gulf, he loved to fish and always had a deep-sea fishing trip on the calendar. From the woods in Ohio to the mountains out west, he loved to hunt. As much as he enjoyed hunting and fishing, it was the time he spent with his friends and family that was the real catch and brought out his infectious smile. Mick was the biggest fan of his kids and grandkids, and never missed an opportunity to make sure they knew it by showing up to every event, big or small. He invested so much into his family’s futures and never stopped trying to better the lives of everyone around him. He had a talent for leadership, mentorship and connecting to others. Losing Mick is like losing a hero. Mick Given was larger than life to his family. His imprint and influence on the lives of so many people and in this community will have a significant impact for generations to come.
