KANAB, Utah (KUTV/WKRC) - Two Ohio men who were caught in flash flooding during a trip to Utah's Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument have been found dead, according to authorities.
The bodies of one of the the hikers was reportedly discovered Sunday morning by a group in the Paria River area in Arizona, approximately half a mile south of the Utah border.
In a statement released Tuesday morning, the Kane County Sheriff's Office said that as authorities were attempting to identify the man, police in West Chester Township, Ohio, contacted the sheriff's office to report two missing men were last heard from on Saturday when they told their families they planned a five-mile hike into Buckskin Gulch.
Pictures provided by the families confirmed that 65-year-old Gary York from West Chester Township was the man whose body was found. Search crews later located the body of 72-year old John Walter from Kettering, Ohio.
An investigation indicated that there was flash flooding in Buckskin Gulch at the time when the two men would have been hiking. Deputies stated that they believe the hikers were "caught by surprise and swept away by the rushing wall of water."
The flooding that carried away York and Walter happened in the same area where two hikers died during flash flooding in March.
