MOST AMAZING PET

...Mrs. Torrance (my cat) turned 19 today!!!...will never forget the rush of anger I felt as I witnessed this twenty-something beach punk kicking this little white stray on the sands of Hermosa Beach, California, December 1, 1990...I was on a date, sitting on the outside patio of this Mexican restaurant, so buzzed on margaritas that I couldn't believe what I was actually seeing...I excused myself and bolted for the dude, who was about two hundred yards away...my adrenaline was peaking, as this idiot was with two other idiots...luckily, they stood off to the side as we went at it (woulda been complete toast)...to cut to the chase, I belted the guy, telling him to get the (insert word of choice) away from this terrified creature...amazingly, as things were growing progressively ugly, our momentum was stalled by the sight of a man from the Hermosa Beach Animal Control walking toward us with a cat carrier...I told him to call the cops on Mr. Jerkoff, and that I would take the cat...I found a box, poked some air holes in it with a pair of scissors given to me by an artist closing her shop on the boardwalk, and went back to the Mexican joint with my new friend...when I took her to the vet for shots, we guessed her age to be about six months...so, June 1st it is...HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY AWESOME BEACH-BABE CAT-- nineteen years young, weighin' in at 7.6 pounds!!!...........

My daughter wanted pets. I didn't. About six summers ago we had several kittens that played in our back yard. My daughter and wife wanted me to catch a couple of them for pets. I ran my butt off trying to catch them but they were faster than Jethro! I put food out for them...and they moved like a military operation. One at a time sneaking up for the food and watching out for each other! Was funny to watch because they were so small. I was convinced to take one and caught one. Later, a tom-cat started killing the others. Guess what? I was told to catch another one. This one had white boots and neck. He was so tiny that we put a trap out which tripped for weight and he was so little it didn't trip! He was very friendly and approached me several times purring...just to run away. One day I went out back and the tom-cat had him around the neck...I sprayed the tom-cat with water and he dropped the kitten and ran. We had a huge storm roar through and many trees were down around town. My wife and daughter went to stay with her parents (they had power) while I watched the kitten at home without power. Well, Bootsie came out and ran around our yard with me chasing him with a fishing net...he was half straved. I finally gave up. I was sittting on the picnic table and he jumped up on the seat by me, he jumped into the net on the table and I picked him up...he was purring and has not stopped ever since! Bootsie, is more like a dog...he comes running if you call him...his picture is on my site! And, Mark...anyone beating an animal should get his ass kicked!

Jules & I were at a party over in North Sioux one night when this neglected kitten crashed the festivities. This little feline sought out Julie's attention and got it all night. When we left the party, we took this dirty little alley cat home with us.

Originally we were going to name him Tequila due to the drink of choice at the party. But we decided to name him after one of our favorite story book characters, Curious George. That was a decade ago and George is still part of our family.

George is the only family pet that we have ever owned, and his name fits his personality perfectly.

Now most house cats as they get older, normally lay around the house and get fat, lazy, and develope an attitude. Not George. For being almost ten years old, he's as active as ever and just can't seem to stay out of trouble. We've learned the hard way that nothing is safe or sacred when he's around.

George has been known to chew into a loaf of french bread that is sitting on top of a breadbox which is sitting on top of the refrig. George also has a thing for chewing up straws. It doesn't matter to him if the straws are in the dish strainer or in a soft drink on the counter. A few weeks ago Julie got up for work only to find that the midnight bandit had gotten into a bag of potato chips that were in the cupboard. The mess was all over the kitchen.

George is quite the character, but our house wouldn't be a home without our favorite fur ball.

Peace be the journey my friends
