Mark Alan Hanson, 46, of Sioux City died Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at a Sioux City hospital following a 10 and one half months battle with cancer.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sunnybrook Community Church, with Jeff Moes officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.
Mark was born Dec. 24, 1959, in Casper, Wyo., the son of Marion and Shirley (Strong) Hanson. He moved with his family to Sioux City at the age of three. He attended school in Sioux City and graduated from North High School in 1978. He continued his education at Morningside College, graduating in 1982. He worked for the Sioux City Foundry for seven years as an accounting manager. He then followed his dream of becoming a police officer. He joined the Sioux City Police Department in September 1989. He served as a police officer for Sioux City for 16 years. He was a school resource officer and G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance and Education Training) instructor. He was most recently assigned as the Police Department Crime Prevention officer in the investigation section.
He married Mari Davidson on Jan. 26, 1993. Together, they made their home in Sioux City. They have three beautiful children, Drew, Blake and Carly. In May 1995, he joined the Naval Reserves and received his honorable discharge in 2006.
He was a member of Sunnybrook Community Church, the Police Officers Association and CAST officer. He was very involved in his children's activities.
He is survived by his wife, Mari Hanson of Sioux City; two sons, Drew Hanson and Blake Hanson, both of Sioux City; a daughter, Carly Hanson of Sioux City; two sisters and their husbands, Deb and Scott Argast of Garrett, Ind., and Cindy and Garry Schanke of Allen, Texas; his mother and father-in-law, Pat and Dick Davidson of Sioux City; a sister-in-law and her husband, Molly and Mark Woodard of Champlin, Minn.; two brothers-in-law, Brad Davidson and his wife, Darlys of Elk Point, S.D., and Barry Davidson of Brooklyn Center, Minn.; and 11 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Shirley Hanson; and a brother, Rodney Hanson.
