Barbara Kueny

 

SIOUX CITY -- Barbara Anne Kueny, 47, of Omaha, formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday, March 7, 2010, at her home after a long courageous battle with breast cancer. 

A Memorial Mass will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Omaha. The family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m. today, with a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m., at the West Center Chapel, 7805 W. Center Road, in Omaha.

A second Memorial Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 13, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Sioux City. Interment will be at a later date in Calvary Cemetery, Sioux City. 

Barbara was born on Aug. 20, 1962, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Richard Leo and Sally Ann Kueny. She graduated from North High School in 1980. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 1985 and a juris doctorate from Creighton University School of Law in 1988.

Barbara was engaged in the private practice of law in Omaha for more than 20 years. She was an active member of the Nebraska State Bar Association. She also served as a judge for the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska for six years. Barbara was proud of the pro bono legal work she did for the YWCA and Legal Aid. She received the YWCA award for her assistance in domestic violence training.

Barbara was an irreplaceable force of nature, and will be dearly missed by friends and family.

Barbara is survived by her parents, Richard and Sally Kueny of Sioux City; three sisters, Mary Beth Runge and husband, Patrick, Sandra Stewart and husband, Shannon, and Kathleen Roe and husband, Robert Jr.; three brothers, Mark Kueny and wife, Elizabeth, Paul Kueny and wife, Becky, and Andy Kueny and wife, Katie. Barbara was the "favorite aunt" to 10 nieces and nephews, Nicholas Stewart, Alec Stewart, Peter Stewart, Max Stewart, Robbie Roe, Gabrielle Roe, Tyler Kueny, Makenna Kueny, Makayla Kueny and Makira Kueny; and grandaunt to Timothy Stewart.
