Though voters in West Virginia are big Trump supporters, incumbent Democratic Senator Joe Manchin has built a lead in the polls-- his #1 campaign issue: health care.

Richard, your spirit is inspiring; confident you have good health care coverage and hearing about your strong support system, I look forward to the best for you.

Thinking of Stephen Hawking, I realize the incredible variability of ALS.

Barack Obama speaks not so much for Democrats as he does for the United States of America.

Vote for the best candidate on the ballot.

Texas Newbie Nancy checking in...
POLICE PROTECTED SKUNK
While enjoying a slow, peaceful drive along the wooded wonderland aptly named “Historic Road,” it was easy for me to drift into thoughts of earlier centuries and imagine the folks who might have owned the massive horse ranches all around me. Adorned with ancient overgrown trees with
finger-like branches linked together above from both sides of the road, I wasn’t really watching where I was driving. But in that moment something caught my eye and I was thankful that I was just creeping along. It was suddenly necessary for me to slam on my brakes. A small, fat, furry creature was ambling across the road right in front of me. As it emerged into the twinkling sunlight, it was easy for me to assume that the fuzzy black fatso with it’s white stripe just might be a skunk, the first I had ever seen out in the wild. Could this be a couch potato skunk that has gorged itself into obesity? ...Or maybe it’s a pregnant female? Fascinated, I quickly pulled over to the side of the road, grabbed my phone and tapped the camera icon. I was working on my second video and the skunk cooperated nicely by turning toward me so I could get a full face pose. The prominent white stripe over it’s forehead traveled straight down toward a twitching nose and was symmetrically spaced between two  bright eyes which seemed to be focused directly behind my car.
Evidently, the skunk saw the cop before I did because the flashing lights startled me.
"Ma’am are you OK?" was his polite greeting as the officer approached my open window.
"Yes, thank you. I’m fabulous," bubbled out my enthusiastic reply.
"Well, why the heck are you pulled over here?" he asked in a somewhat annoyed tone of voice.
Pointing to the skunk, who was now scurrying away from us across the field, I stupidly exclaimed, “Look! I made a video! It’s amazing!”
He stared down at me with a pathetic sort of exasperation.
“It’s a skunk! Ain't you never seen a skunk before?”
The answer, “No,” came out of my mouth before I could think about how ridiculously silly it probably sounded.
After checking my driver’s license and evidently verifying that I was not an escapee from a senior citizen’s mental ward or a wanted fugitive, he simply pointed out how cars come speeding down this street, so pulling over as I did might prove to be dangerous. Although I had not seen one car come down this quiet road for the entire time, fortunately the logical side of my brain kept me from commenting on this. Instead, I thanked him kindly, rolled carefully onto the road and headed home, all the while speaking aloud a prayer of gratitude for my blessings.
God, how I love Texas!
By the way,  less than a week later, I got to see another skunk, this time really close up. He was a de-scented pet brought to the Aubrey Library by Safari Gregg as part of his animal show!

Thank you, Jim Ditkowsky, for encouraging us to communicate.

Yesterday, according to my World Wildlife Fund Calendar, was GRANDPARENTS DAY.  My son Adam called me to wish me a HAPPY GRANDPARENTS DAY, and we laughed about it.  His offspring, Olivia, Monty, and Archey bring great joy to us as their grandparents.  They are acknowledged in my Classmate Profile.

Thanks again, Jim, for your encouragement, and the great job you and our other classmates are doing on the FORUM communication.

Hurricane Florence is churning toward the east coast--

Residents in Florence’s path are evacuating to shelter from the storm...

Projected rainfall extending far inland is astounding...

Power outages could take weeks to restore...

Florida’s looking like the safest place from the mid Atlantic south...

We live in the real world, not reality TV.

Beware a false sense of security...

Be safe.

JOY
Dr. Joy Koch has become a dear friend over the nearly 30 years of being her patient, a fellow dog walker, a fellow ski instructor, and spiritual cohort.
Before departing Incline Village (Nevada)for my drive to North Central Texas, I was certain to get an appointment with her, mainly to give her a sad Goodbye hug.
While I was there I thought I would ask her if there was any possibility  that I might be experiencing symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease?  When she asked why I might think that, I explained, “Because  I found my car keys in the refrigerator.”
That amazingly warm smile of hers spread across her face as she quietly asked me, “Did you put them there on purpose?“
“Of course not!” I stated emphatically.  “When I thought it through, I remembered carrying a gallon of milk with both hands and setting it inside the fridge. My car keys must have been hooked on my finger. They probably slid off into the refrigerator when I set the milk down. “
“Nothing to worry about.“ Dr. Koch laughed as she spoke. “If you had Alzheimer’s, you would believe that the refrigerator is where your keys belong. Just like your purse belongs in the microwave.  Many people suffer from YOUR ailment. No, it’s definitely not Alzheimer’s... It’s called Sometimers Disease!”
We both shook, laughing hard, as we hugged a very long and lovely goodbye.

"Sometimers Disease"--        a side effect during radiation ? ? ?              sometimes caught myself putting the milk into the microwave...

Interesting how the media races to storms to tell residents to leave...

Though wind often gets the headlines,

water is what’s most responsible for deaths in a hurricane...

Hurricane Florence will bring lots of water--

rain will pour down in heavy rain bands

and water will come up from the ocean in storm surge.

The first rain bands of Florence are drenching the Carolina coast... rivers are jumping their banks...

Be safe.

Today’s weather in Oshkosh, WI is not historic-- I love seeing so many girls participating in sports-- my granddaughter just won a competitive tennis match-- Anika played her best against the best opponent she’s faced this season.

**Seventy homes in Massachusetts were impacted by gas explosions.

***Friday afternoon Florence was downgraded-- 350 mile wide tropical storm Florence is dragging its way through the Carolinas-- extreme flash flooding and storm surge in rivers and inlets will continue into next week.

FACTS:

“A hotter world is a hungrier world.”

Mitch McConnell who denied Merrick Garland a hearing claims Democrats are not maintaining a “standard bi-partisan” and “regular order”.

Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) says Kavanaugh told him that he was not at the party where the accuser says he assaulted her.  (In 1991 Hatch said, “I’ve known (Clarence Thomas) for 11 years, and I don’t believe he is capable of that kind of harassment.”)

OPINION:

Rushing this confirmation through the process is not treating anyone fairly.

FACT:

Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley (R- IA) announced that Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford have been invited to testify under oath at a public hearing before the panel Monday, September 24th.

OPINION:

The Senate should take a step back-- a search for truth takes time: Let's hear the testimony before we make a decision.

The FBI should have time to complete a background investigation before the hearing.

The Senate Judiciary Committee should work with professionals to prepare for the hearing.

Take a look at Chuck Grassley and Orrin Hatch and other members of the Senate Judiciary Committee 27 years ago questioning Anita Hill at the Clarence Thomas hearing.  Have Hatch’s attitudes about women changed?

Senators need the assistance of professionals in this process-- their job is to advise and consent.

(Pope Francis too is “woefully in the grip of male-dominated clericalism even though he criticizes it.”   -- James Carroll

(“Nearly a year after #MeToo, power structures facilitating sexual misconduct remain very much intact.”   -- Jia Tolentino

FACT:

Brett Kavanaugh in 2015: "What happens at Georgetown Prep, stays at Georgetown Prep.  I think that's been a good thing for all of us."

The judicial committee could simplify things.  Nominate and confirm Merrick.  According to Ted Cruz, Cavanaugh and Merrick agreed 96% of the time on rulings.

Understanding lying to the FBI is a crime, why is it Professor Ford, and not Judge Kavanaugh, who is requesting an FBI background investigation and additional witnesses?

Why has Judge Kavanaugh been hunkered down at the White House all week?

The rush to a hearing is unnecessary and contrary to the Committee discovering the truth... there is no deadline for a Senate judicial confirmation vote.

The Washington press corps has a job to do: we need the media to challenge politicians with their own words--we suffer a partisan double standard.

It is hard to advise and consent before you know the facts.  Are we to respect the vetting process of the Senate?

Professor Ford is NOT being accorded the process Pres GHW Bush put in place for Anita Hill who never-the-less was treated disrespectfully by Senators at the hearing for Clarence Thomas.

Two professional witnesses for Judge Kavanaugh stated their support for Judge Garland at the Kavanaugh hearing.  Mitch McConnell describes the struggle for Senate seats as a "knife fight in an alley"-- that’s the environment McConnell fosters.

The protests feel different today-- #MeToo stories that include a “hearing” by men who don’t care.  The Republican Senators are all too eager to move forward to vote.  Chuck Grassley pulled down his tweet indicating Kavanaugh's confirmation is a done deal.

FACT:

“Whoever she is, she’s mixed up,” Republican Utah Senator Orrin Hatch.

How do we teach our chidren values when SCOTUS nominee laughs at question about his youth?            Republican Louisiana Senator John Kennedy asked Judge Kavanaugh about his youth-- was he a John-boy Walton or a Ferris Bueller? all we heard was Brett Kavanaugh laughing in front of a large group of young girls wearing Blessed Sacrament School plaid jumpers and Peter Pan collars where Kavanaugh coaches Catholic Youth Organization basketball... "What a prop!  I call BS."

FACT:

Brett Kavanaugh in 2015: “What happens at Georgetown Prep, stays at Georgetown Prep.  I think that’s been a good thing for all of us.”

Truth (not time) is of the essence.

My concern is not that Kavanaugh is a sexual predator--

“High school isn’t the totality of a life... he could have said: ‘Like a lot of misguided teenagers, I drank irresponsibly, and I have only vague memories of that time.  I am certain as I stand here today that I never attacked anyone, and I have no specific recollection of Dr. Ford.  But if I or any of my friends were involved in immature behavior that was painful to anyone at the time, I regret it.’  - or -

“ ‘Judge me for my lifetime of service, not for whatever may have happened at 17 that I was too stupid and drunk to remember.’

“But that’s not what Kavanaugh is saying.  He dismisses not only the allegation but the context around it.  He says he wasn’t that kind of kid.  He says he wasn’t there, in the house Ford can describe in detail.  He makes a victim of her all over again, by essentially calling her delusional.  He makes no allowance for the possibility that his own memory is blurred by inebriated youth.”

And there is a pattern of deception I heard and saw from Kavanaugh in his judicial hearing.

“My fear is that his experiences as a partying teenager didn’t actually teach him a hell of a lot about fallibility or shame ... A Supreme Court justice doesn’t need to be a perfect person, or to have led an unfailingly exemplary life.  None of us can say that.  But, especially on a divided court in a divided nation, we deserve a justice who demonstrates a capacity for nuance, reflection, and humility.

“Whatever else is true about him, Brett Kavanaugh doesn’t seem to be that guy.”

David St. Pierre Bantz

I watched only short segments of the Senate Committee's confirmation hearing. While Judge Kavenaugh was civil and moderate, I cringed at the interaction with Senator Harris. She asked straigthforwardly whether Judge Kavenaugh thought Obergefell v Hodges (the landmark case on same sex marriage) was "rightly decided." This is not asking a hypothetical question, it is asking for comments on the legal reasoning in a settled case, something judges and lawyers do commonly. Judge Kavenaugh declined to give any real answer, instead starting to mansplain to the Senator the legal background of the case. Senator Harris properly asked him not to as she and otheres were quite familiar with it but rather wanted his view of that SC decision. He barely hid his contempt and sense of privilege as he smirked and refused to answer the question. In a different exchange Senator Harris asked if Judge Kavenaugh had had discussions about the ongoing investigation of Trump with members of a specific law firm representing Trump. I saw him smirk again and ask "which member" of the firm. "Any member" of the firm replied the Senator, to which clever Judge Kavenaugh replied he couldn't possibly say without knowing "which person" the Senator meant.

The Judge's smug sense of superiority and entitlement in responding to approrpiate and polite questions from this Senator appears to be the result of a lifetime of being pampered, privledged, and isolated from the conerns and lives of the vast majority of Americans. So far as I can tell he genuinely sees his role as a benign overseer of lesser beings - those not in the fabulously wealthy and privileged Washington establishment to which he proudly belongs, and especially women. His proud prep school classmate, who has vociferously defended him, previously wrote of their routine bouts of drinking and womanizing, including drinking to the point of blackout. Judge Kavenaugh may genuinely not remember attempted rape under the influence of booze, and he may genuinely beleive that as a Brahmin such behavior should not blemish his carefully cultivated public personna of well bred beneficence.
