What joy! on the morning of November 8th, eight historic bells in Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral's northern belfry began to ring out for the first time since Parisians and the world watched in horror as a devastating fire tore through the centuries-old cathedral. The April 2019 fire damaged some parts of the cathedral irrevocably, though a feared collapse was averted. The fire toppled the iconic spire, melted the lead-covered roof, and brought charred beams and stones crashing down. The first task after the fire was to stabilize the structure. Then the cleaning that eradicated both fire damage and centuries of dirt. More than 2,000 architects, engineers, and craftspeople used artisanal methods to painstakingly re-create what was lost and restore what could be saved.

Firefighters saved the towers. Some of the limestone gargoyles and grotesques were damaged by water pressure from the hoses and have been restored or recarved.

The eight bells of the north tower have been cleaned and restored. The pair of bells in the south tower were undamaged. Three new bells have been installed above the altar.

Though modern designs were proposed, the decision favored a reproduction of the 315-foot spire that was toppled by the fire. The rooster atop the spire is new, it has "wings of fire" representing the cathedral, like a phoenix, rising from the ashes; the damaged rooster will be displayed in a new museum. The sixteen copper statues below the spire had been removed before the fire as part of restoration work, they have been reinstalled.

The flying buttresses played an important role in preventing the cathedral's collapse during the fire.

The stained-glass rose windows survived the fire and will be fully restored as part of future work.

Notre Dame will reopen December 8th.

Hello Y'all, My favorite part of the Notre Dame reopening ceremony was getting to hear the nearly 8000 pipes of the 3-story organ.

So, in the "What a Coincidence" Department --- My granddaughter, Norah, had a leading role as one of the maids in Evanston's production of "The Nutcracker on Ice" for the first two performances.  After the show, I took this picture of her (with my wife, Eve and daughter, Alison):

A few days later, came across this picture of Fran (Garfield) Brown's daughter and granddaughter Mia, who performed in the same role for the final two performances (note the same costume):

How about that for a coincidence!!!!

That's so cool! Definitely a coincidence. I'm sure your granddaughter gets her talent from you!

So the granddaughters shared the same role in multiple performances of the same production?
Wow!

It is tragic to see wind-driven wildfires in Greater L.A. causing apocalyptic destruction.

The Santa Ana Wind sweeps west from the deserts.

It takes courage to have hope.

   Without hope life is hopeless.

    It's been said:

A person can live forty days without food,

                                       four days without water,

                                      four minutes without air,

but only four seconds without hope.

Things have changed here since I moved here living at sunset and doheny wla in 1977. It's filled with bums from something called prop 47 making petty theft unprosecutable. Most importantly the wildfires r uncontrollable. My first question when I moved here was y r there no homes up on the hills. Well nor there r homes there where once it was not safe to build. It's how we try to answer the affordable hiusing issues. Plus city and county government never changed firefighting infrastructure with enough water including saltwater to cope.
god hope our elected officials to have wisdom in coping with these chronic issues. Meanwhile we've had beautiful weather in Laguna woods with no smoke and temps in the 70's. It was a great day for ebiking on the strand yesterday. Our turn may come next week so fingers crossed.

Bob, it is good to hear from you, to know that you're safe and well and ebiking.
It is absolutely amazing to hear that the weather in Laguna Woods has been beautiful with no smoke and temps in the 70s - during this time of apocalyptic wind-driven wildfires so close to you.
I'm with you and your neighbors, fingers and toes crossed, that the Santa Ana winds calm down. Take care and please keep us posted.

A number of old friends from near and far have been inquiring about my well-being in the SoCal fires. People, everything is fine in Palm Springs. I appreciate the concern. I really do. But we are 2+ hours from the nearest fire. And the Santa Ana winds blow WEST from here, toward LA and the sea. Some irresponsible media outlets I have been told are falsely including Palm Springs and the desert in their apocalyptical news coverage. It's very tragic what has been happening on the other side of the mountain. And some day Palm Springs may have their own disaster to deal with (like the San Andreas fault) but this isn't it. If your plans for a January escape call for a stay in Palm Springs by all means, come on out. Temp today was 70 degrees and clear blue skies.
I feel very fortunate to be a "snowbird" in my retirement. Palm Springs in winter. Oregon in summer. How long can I keep it up? Well, am 78 and so far so good! 😊

Have seen no groundhogs in Florida today, but last night, after midnight, I saw a monkey slinking around the pool area (scavenging for food?).

Steven Hirschtick has died. Residing in Thailand for the last 30 years with his wife Orawon and two adopted children, Steven passed away suddenly yesterday. Steven was a lawyer and law professor and a philanthropist--helping to inprove schools and living conditions in the North of Thailand.  Many times he told me that he wanted his tombststone to be inscribed "The World's Greatest Ballroom Dancer."

Steve generously shared his time and insight and photos on our Message Forum. For years I have missed his posts where he shared so much of himself and now am struck with sadness for his wife Orawon, children, and friends. It makes me happy to remember he lived to celebrate the Cubs' World Series Championship. His life was a blessing.

Steve and I were not friends in high school days, not sure why.  But the last few years we had emailed each other a number of times.  He certainly was never at a loss for words.  His emails were near novellas.

His memory is a blessing.  Rest in peace Steve.

What a shock, It's sad that Steve felt he had to quit posting on the Forum.  Apart from the fact we lost some contriversal conversations, we lost track of him. His passing was a shock, to me anyway, perhaps we would have had some indication thet he was not well had he continued.

RIP Steve.
