Lawrence Irvin (Larry) Nelson

From Don Kuehn:

Larry and I were close during high school and together we took a trip to California after graduation. We left home with $55 in our pockets (less $2.50 to fill up the gas tank!) and we were gone for six weeks. We hit every relative we could find along the way and eventually made it to Cal, up the coast into Oregon and then home via Wisconsin where we visited two former teachers: Blackburn (Art) and Skuban (PE) who had places there. We had bought a car together, he paying for the car, me paying the insurance, with the understanding that I would pay him back for the car when we returned. It was quite a trip to say the least. Twice we had to resort to an SOS to family and a very good friend to wire money to us via Western Union, but we made it on a few caddie gigs and some rather bold begging. Larry had Muscular Distrophy... you know, he was one of “Jerry’s kids” and he soldiered on against the odds of surviving for many years after others would have handed in their papers. Life was a challenge and his wife of over 46 years was his primary caregiver until her ability to lift and move him just became too much. Larry passed away on August 23, 2020. He had been moved to an assisted living facility in Idaho because the Medicaid laws and other considerations made it more appropriate for him and the family. Many of our classmates contributed to a Go Fund Me effort to help Julie pay his monthly living expenses. I know she appreciated every single dollar that was pledged. Through out his long and trying ordeal I never heard Larry utter a negative word about his condition. Every phone conversation I had with him was optimistic and accepting of the hand he was dealt. His faith, his family and those who kept contact with him helped usher him through his challenges and made him an inspiration. Rest old friend, and run, and celebrate and be free.
