Anita Donovan (Teacher)


Anita V. Donovan, 94, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 22, in Red Bank, N.J. Visitation will be Tuesday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Thompson Memorial Funeral Home, 310 Broad St., Red Bank. A Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m., at the Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church in Rumson. Interment will follow at St. Catherine's Cemetery in Spring Lake. Born in Jersey City in 1915, Anita was the daughter of Mary and Vito Vuocolo. She graduated from Jersey City State Teachers College in 1935. Anita spent more than 20 years as a primary and special education teacher for the Franklin Township school district in Somerset County, N.J., retiring in 1977. A longtime resident of Highland Park, where she raised her family, Anita was active in the community, and St. Paul's Church, where she served as president of the Rosary Society and taught CCD. Anita was appointed to the mayor's commission on aging, and was active with the Senior Citizens in Highland Park. Anita volunteered for the Middlesex County adult literacy program. Anita enjoyed life and loved music, dancing, traveling, painting, the Jersey shore and spending time with her family. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas J., in 1971, and her five brothers, Joseph, Salvatore, Charles, Alfred, and Conrad. Anita is survived by her sisters, Rosalie Bailey of Paramus, N.J., and Irene Giallombardo of Maywood, N.J., and by two sisters-in-law, Rosemarie Vuocolo of Point Pleasant, and Marie Vuocolo of Manchester Township, N.J. She is also survived by her beloved seven children and their families, Marie Donovan of Middletown, Janet Hargett (husband Joe) of Little Rock, Ark., Thomas Donovan (wife Michelle) of Norfolk, Va., Dyanne Sebastian (husband Alan) of Hillsborough, Anita Donovan of Middletown, Richard Donovan (wife Joyce) of Rumson, and Peggy Donovan (husband Bill Kugel) of Kendall Park; her 17 cherished grandchildren, Andrea, Jennifer, T.J., Lisa, Kyle, Michael, Jonathan, Rick, Christopher, Margaret, Katie, Tommy, Kathleen, Kellie, Sara, James, and Maggie, and her eight great-grandchildren, Donovan, Jason, Ryan, Evan, John, James, Alexandra, and Hunter. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the caring staff and many friends at Navesink Harbor, where Anita resided in her final years.
