Mr. Daniel J. Richards (Teacher-Sgs)

Obituary: Daniel Joseph Richards, age 26, of Hockessin, Delaware, died tragically Thursday, October 4, 2007, from injuries inflicted by another driver in a car accident near Hayden, Colorado. Born in Wilmington Delaware on November 21, 1980, he was the son of Jean and John Richards of Hockessin. He attended St. John the Beloved Elementary School and graduated from St. Mark‚s High School in 1999. He earned the Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America in 1997 and became an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 29 at Red Clay Presbyterian Church. He worked for several summers at Camp Russell, Boy Scouts of America, in Woodgate, NY, as a counselor, the Conservation Area Director and a High Adventure Trek Guide in the Adirondack Mountains. He also worked at Brandywine Creek State Park as a seasonal naturalist. In 2004 he graduated from Cook College, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ, with a B.S. in Natural Resource Management, and a Science & Agriculture Teacher Education Certification. He then became a Life Science Teacher at the Sampson G.Smith Middle School in Franklin Township, Somerset, NJ, where he taught Life Science to middle school students. In 2006 he volunteered at the Independence National Historic Park, Philadelphia, PA and in 2007 he became a Yellowstone National Park Ranger in Wyoming. Daniel helped care for special places so that we all may experience our heritage. Daniel had a number of hobbies and interests, including playing the piano, collecting comic books, listening to music and movies as well as bowling, hiking and camping, and above all making new friends wherever he went. Daniel leaves many people to remember him, among these his beloved parents Jean and John Richards, sister Kathleen Richards, grandmother Elizabeth Parra, his aunt Annarose and uncle John Parra, cousins Joanne, John, and Lawrence Parra, and extended family and many wonderful friends. He will be greatly missed by them all. In addition his grandfather John Parra and his grandparents Ralph and Catherine Richards predecease him. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial, at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE 19808 on Saturday, October 13 at 10 am. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery,6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE. Visitation will be held at the Doherty Funeral Home, 3200 Limestone Road, Wilmington, DE 19808 on Friday evening, October 12, from 5-8 pm.
