Susan E. (Nimtz) Hartzell
February 27, 1952 ~ November 8, 2025
Susan Nimtz Hartzell, 73, of South Bend, Indiana, died on November 8, 2025. Mrs. Hartzell is survived by a son, Thomas M. Heitger, his wife, Susannah, and a granddaughter, Natalia, of Chicago, IL. She is also survived by two brothers, John Nimtz (Carolyn) of Ocala, FL, and Tom Nimtz of South Bend. Mrs. Hartzell also has three step-children, Michelle Conway, Chad (Kristin) Hartzell, and Rachel (Joe) Waltz and grandchildren Erin and Sydney Conway, Connor and Tyler Hartzell, and Maya and Jillian Waltz. Mrs. Hartzell also has three nieces who reside in Florida: Carla Stewart (John), Angela Parra (Ivan), and Laura Lagano (Joe). There is also a great-niece, Alexa Parra and five great-nephews: James Tortora (Gaby), John and Michael Stewart, and Collin and Dillon Lagano. Mrs. Hartzell was preceded in death by her husband, Craig Hartzell, a sister, Julie Breen, brother-in law, Ken Breen, sister-in-law, Monica Nimtz, father Everett W., and mother, Dorothy Nall Nimtz.
Mrs. Hartzell received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from Indiana University at South Bend and Master’s Degree from St. Francis College in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Mrs. Hartzell was a teacher for the South Bend Community School Corporation for more than 34 years. She taught most of her career at Darden, Nuner, and Edison Schools.
Mrs. Hartzell was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church located at 63568 IN-931, South Bend, Indiana 46614. A memorial mass will be celebrated at the Church on November 14, 2025 at 11:00am. There will be a visitation in the Fellowship Hall at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church 9:00am until 11:00am preceding the memorial mass. Burial will follow the mass at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church or Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.
