SOUTH BEND - Gregory E. Hatfield, 48, passed away at 4:20 a.m. Thursday morning, September 11, 2008, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. Greg was born on November 9, 1959, in South Bend to Robert and Judith (Basker) Hatfield.
He was a proud employee of the A.M. General Corporation.
He was survived by his wife, Jenny (Taylor) Hatfield; mother, Judith Hatfield of South Bend; two daughters, Ashley Hatfield and Terri (Dan) Stauffer; two grandsons, Shawn and Jacob, born to Terri (Dan); Also survived by his paternal grandmother, Jane Hatfield of Donaldson, IN; two sisters, Susan (Mike) Husen of West Olive, MI and Patty (Jeff) Lubelski of South Bend; also three brothers, Donald Hatfield, John (Dawn) Hatfield and James Hatfield all of South Bend; and an uncle, Charles (Janet) Hatfield of South Bend. Greg was also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Gregory enjoyed things such as caring for his lawn, grilling, golfing, bowling, and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed drawing which he inherited from his grandfather, Edward Basker, and he later passed the gift on to his daughter Ashley. Greg lived a full life, and loved his family dearly. He lived in San Francisco for nine years, where he met his wife and the mother of his daughters Jenny (Taylor) Hatfield. He then returned to his family in South Bend, where he married Jenny and she gave birth to Ashley.
Greg's family will greatly miss him and treasure the memories they have of him. He is finally free of the sickness, that caused him much pain and suffering, and he now resides with the angels in Heaven never to suffer again. "I am home in Heaven, dear ones; Oh, so happy and so bright! There is Perfect joy and beauty In this Everlasting light. All the pain and grief is over, Every restless tossing passed; I am now at peace forever, Safely home in Heaven at Last. Did you wonder I so calmly Trod the valley of the shade? Oh! But Jesus' love illumined Every dark and Fearful glade And he came Himself to meet me In that way so hard to tread; And with Jesus' arm to lean on, Could I have doubt or dread? Then you must not grieve so sorely, For I love you dearly still; Try to look beyond earth's shadows, Pray to trust our Father's Will. There is work still waiting for you, So you must not Idly stand Do it now, while life remaineth. You shall rest in Jesus' land. When that work is all completed, He will gently call you Home; Oh, the rapture of that meeting, Oh the joy to see you come!"
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 15, 2008, at St. Matthew Cathedral followed by the Burial in the Southlawn Cemetery. Family and friends may attend the viewing from 2-6 Sunday September 14, at Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S.
