In Memory
David H. Shock
March 29, 1947 ~ June 13, 2025 78 Years Old
David went to the arms of Jesus on June 13, 2025. He was a faith filled man who enjoyed life to the fullest. One week before his death, he went on a cruise with his wife Wanda, his daughter Emily Ranney, his son-in-law Shannen Ranney, and his two grandchildren, Isabelle Ranney and Logan Ranney. This precious time together was an exclamation point to the end of his life.
David was born to Charles A. Shock Sr. and Emily M. (Wunsch) Shock, in 1947 in South Bend. Along with his brother, Charles A. Shock Jr. and his sister Charlene Shock Pinkerton, they attended Nuner School and John Adams High School. He graduated in 1965. David then attended Ball State University and later graduated from Indiana University South Bend after his return from his military service.
David proudly and honorably served in The U.S. Army 67th MP Company from 1967 to 1969. He served in Viet Nam from 1967 to 1968. He always had a special prayer for veterans. He joined the South Bend Police Department in 1970, serving as a patrol officer, undercover officer for the Special Operations Section and for 20 years as a supervisor on the midnight shift. But he was best known as that “Crime Stopper’s Guy,” Lt. Dave Shock. David put his heart and soul into helping victims of violent crime and homicide and their loved ones. He served as Vice President of Crime Stoppers International and served on the Illinois and Michigan Crime Stoppers boards
David married his wife Wanda, in 1983 and retired with Wanda in 2007. They became the happy owners of the Bed N Breakfast Registry for 9 years. David was a member of South Bend Rotary until the time of his illness, serving as president in 1996. He was selected as Optimist of the Year in 1994, and Police Officer of the Year in 2006 by the Indiana Council of Fraternal Veterans and Social Societies and other recognitions too numerous to remember. David loved traveling and never met a beach or umbrella drink he didn’t like. David also enjoyed volunteering for St. Vincent de Paul for 20 years, delivering food to the homes of the needy. When he could no longer deliver food, he could be seen buying numerous packages of chicken and trying to balance the items on top of his rollator for purchase. His last chicken donation was three weeks ago.
David was a devote Catholic and loved his faith and the Lord. He was a daily Mass attendee for over 15 years until his illnesses. He died on St. Anthony de Padua’s Memorial Day; his patron saint that he prayed to as a friend.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 28, 2025 at Little Flower Catholic Church. The rosary will be prayed at 1:15pm. The family is immensely grateful for Fr. Julius’ loving pastoral care while David was so sick in the hospital. A celebration of life will be held at a later time.
David was fun and funny, smart, gentle and loving. He lived his life with a deep faith in God, a firm belief in service to others and joyfully celebrating sunsets with a glass of Cabernet. His life was well lived and he was loved so, so much.
