Toby Lee (Priebe) Szekendy
July 16, 1934 ~ December 25, 2024 90 Years Old
Toby Szekendy, a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and master of the Electric Slide, passed away on Christmas Day at Greenleaf Health Campus in Elkhart. She was 90 years old — a fact you’d struggle to believe if you’ve ever seen her on the dance floor.
Toby was born in South Bend on July 16, 1934 to Harry and Jeanette (Cieslak) Priebe.
On January 9, 1954, she married the love of her life, Louis Szekendy, with whom she enjoyed nearly 70 years of wedded bliss until his death in December 2023.
Toby and Louis spent their entire marriage in the same home in South Bend’s Edison Park neighborhood, where they also raised their two children, Judy and Mike.
Toby was employed by Crawford and Company until her retirement.
Speaking of retirement… that’s when Toby was able to focus on her greatest loves — country-western dancing, spending time with her grandchildren and riding shotgun in Louis’ immaculately detailed car on their many drives around town.
Toby is survived by her daughter Judy (Kevin) Henderson; son Mike (Patti) Szekendy; grandchildren Amber Pulford, Ashley (Brad) O’Chap, Bradey (Alexandra) Szekendy, Blake Szekendy, Bryse Szekendy; and great-grandchildren Emmy, Max, Olivia and Reagan.
Toby was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Louis.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, December 28, 2024 at Palmer Funeral Home – Welsheimer North Chapel. Friends may visit with family from 10:00 am until the start of services. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com
