Mr. Hillis, was affectionately" known as "The Bear". He was a 1943 graduate at VBHS in a class of 15. An Army Veteran of WW II. In 1951, he entered Tennessee Tech University and graduated with a B.S. degree in 1953. His teaching career began at Spencer Elementary in 1954. He recieved his Masters Degree in Education Administration in 1957. He retired from Van Buren County School System in 1979.
Johnny Hillis passed away December 12, 2009.

Whoever knew all that square dancing he taught us in P.E. would help me catch my present husband, He was very fair even when I got caught fighting with three other girls and he made us all write a 5000 word essay and he had somebody count the words just to make sure we didn't short him a word. I wish they still made principals like him today.
