Looks like I'm missing this reunion too. Once again I'm overseas. This time I'm living in Torquay Australia - a little over an hour from Melbourne in the Surf Coast Shire. Yes I live in the Shire, and yes we have great surfing here. Bells Beach is just down the road.
Why Australia? First, I married a lovely woman from Canada, so instead of choosing one of our countries, we wanted to go to neutral ground. Second, I wanted to learn to surf after spending decades snowboarding in the mountains. You may remember that I was in New Zealand for our Junior year, so Australia was not a huge change culturally. I even had 4 friends here already.
I miss home, especially when people get married, have kids, go to class reunions, etc. But living in Australia is pretty laid back in many respects. Another big perk to living in Australia is the economy, its fine and I have a permanent position at the high school where I teach. With a new baby and a family to support, its hard to consider leaving. Plus, its complicated moving to the US or Canada when all three of us have different citizenships. Lachlan is Australian and we have not applied for other citizenships yet.
I was home (well, in Bellingham where my parents now live) over Christmas and January. It was great to catch up with friends and family, but we enjoyed coming home to Australia. We did stock up on all the cheap clothing and shoes in the US though, the cost of living is pretty high here.
So what does the future hold? Good question... not sure. Jen and I are permanent residents, so we can stay for a while, but will probably end up back in the US or Canada at some point, so hopefully we will see you at the next reunion. Have a great time catching up, cheers mate!
