Gary David Singer

Gary David Singer, owner and operator of downtown musical instruments store Dutch’s Inc., died Friday, Feb 22, 2013 of unknown cause. He was 66. Singer joined the family-run pawnshop and musical instrument store in 1971. He left graduate school to help his father, Bob Singer, run the business but eventually earned a master’s degree in economics from the University of Oregon. He was the third generation in his family to run Dutch’s Inc., which has been in business for 98 years. Gary took over the business when his father retired in the 1980s. Singer was a longtime supporter of the Spokane Food Bank, which later became Second Harvest Food Bank. He served on the nonprofit’s board and worked to raise community awareness about hunger. He and his wife, Mary, have three children. Rick Singer said his brother was devoted to his family, Judaism, and playing bridge. Singer was a Silver Lifetime Master, a ranking earned by winning points at sanctioned bridge tournaments.

We were friends at LC and for a couple of years in the early 90s Gary and my son Robert, then a student at Sac, partnered in bridge.

I remember both he and his Dad from working at Liberty Furniture and saw Bob alot as he came over to visit with David J, Harry and David A. great people and the best bosses. Will remember countless hours they put into pickles for the Kosher Dinner. Gary will be missed and fondly remembered by our class.

I remember Gary from high school. He was one of my very good friends. He was very bright and friendly. He is missed as are too many others.

I remember playing tennis with Gary in the summers at Comstock Park when we all were still in grade school. I kind of recall also playing some chess with him there too.

first electric guitar I purchased was from Dutch's. I assumed it was a pawn shop (I think it was along with new stuff.)  Also bought a used Gibson bass amp as well. It was a tube job with one big woofer. Still wish i had that amp today.
