I read in the COMMONS NEWS (paper) that “Art Lockwood” “Went West”, aviator’s definition of a fellow passing. Also being an aviator, we shared a likeness of being totally free of Earth’s bonds when our wheels lifted off the runway. Very few experience that emotion and the Earth below us with the birds, a finicky beautiful environment. The worse aspect about flying is returning to earth. Read he got married in the air, WOW! Wish I knew that Art lived close by me being in Townshend.

I remember Art briefly, different HS courses. One memorable discussion was in a study hall, he showed me pics of airplanes. After SHS I joined the Air Force, love of flying. Art shared that feeling as I know many pilots do. If we flew together, experiences would be fantastic and would know each better.

From the compatibility desire of flying, I’ve always remembered Art and have that school’s visual encounter with him in my mind. Aviators have a kinship with fellow aviators and incorporate the pioneering spirit and seek different frontiers. RIP fellow flyer, to the sunset.

I am sorry to hear about the loss of another classmate.  I also wish comfort and wonderful memories to his family.  It sounds like he lived a full and happy life.  I also grew up on a farm, so we share that background.

My deepest sympathies & prayers to the family.

My sincere sympathy to Arthur Lockwoods's family.  I remember him as always a good guy. I wish I had known his birthday was two days before mine, it would have been a connection. He did some wonderful things in his life. Another connection if we had known, my granddaughter is living in Wilmington now. My best to all Art's family.

On January 16, 2016 a lady named Sharon Montgomery e-mailed via the site's Contact Us feature, "I purchased a Boy Scout Handbook today in a Goodwill Store Austin, Texas. Inside the cover is a handwritten name in pencil saying: Arthur Lockwood Troop 15 Springfield, Vt. Dec. 1950 I would love your assistance in locating the family of Mr. Lockwood so that I can send this book to them."

I subsequently got hold of Art by phone told him of her offer and got his address that I forwarded to her. She sent the book and Art called me to say how excited he was to have received it.

Today, February 5, 2018, while looking through some old messages I came across Sharon's original request. I sent her a link to Art's obituary on the '57 class site and got this almost immediate response from her.

" Dear Fred,

Thank you very much for letting me know about Art’s passing.

My husband and I were just talking about him yesterday morning.  We were having a waffle and wishing we still had some of the delicious maple syrup Art sent to us from Vermont.

It’s funny that we had no connection whatsoever except for the Boy Scout book, but I found myself following the weather in Vermont and comparing your frigid temperatures to our weather here in Texas.

Please convey my deepest sympathy to Art’s wife and family.

I, too, shall remember his thoughtfulness in sending the syrup to us.

Best wishes,

Sharon"
