BENNINGTON - Robert P. Morton, 68, died May 8, 2011, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

He was born in Brandon, Jan. 15, 1943, the son of John W. and Harriett (Weston) Morton.

He was a 1961 graduate of Springfield High School.

Mr. Morton was a truck driver for several companies, including Goddard Trucking, Rouse's Transportation, Sandri Sunoco in Springfield and after moving to Bennington, Albany Transportation, Berkshire Bulk and United Magill, as well as Jerome Construction, and as a transporter for area auto dealers. He was currently driving for Bennington Taxi. In earlier years in Springfield, he worked for S.R Young, Bryant Grinder, Fellows Gear Shaper, and did painting for Jack Robinson.

He was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles in Bennington and a former member of the VFW, Moose and Elks.

He was an avid hunter and he enjoyed driving.

Survivors include two sons, John Morton of Bennington and Kenneth Morton of Ooltewah, Tenn.; four grandchildren; a sister, Stasia Carey of Springfield; a brother, Seeley Morton of Chester; two ex-wives, Linda McCauley Morton of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Rhoda Welch Morton of Bennington; nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Morton was predeceased by a brother, Wilbur Quimby.

The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 13, in Oakland Cemetery in Springfield, with the Rev. Thomas Charlton officiating.

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 12, at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington.

Memorial contributions may be made to Fraternal Order of Eagles or American Heart Association , in care of Mahar and Son Funeral Home.
