SPRINGFIELD — A memorial service for Ronald E. Knapp, 40, who died unexpectedly September 19, 1984 in Shrewsbury, will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the First Congregational Church. The Rev. Charles G. Campbell will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery at the convenience of the family. 

He was born in Springfield, May 25, 1944, son of Kenneth and Flora (Hastings) Knapp. 

He graduated from Springfield High School in 1962 and went on to graduate from Kutztown University in Pennsylvania. Locally he has served as an art teacher in the Springfield school system for the past 18 years, held the position of district art coordinator of this area as well as holding the offices of past president, vice president, and a trustee of the Springfield Art and Historical Society. He served as the varsity ski coach for over 16 years and for eight years was coach of the junior varsity soccer team. He also served in the capacity of varsity soccer coach for a number of years. From 1980 to 1983 he was a summer counselor for the Vermont Department of Education. 

Survivors include his mother of Springfield; a brother, Robert K. Knapp of Springfield; a sister, Mrs. Arnold (Shirley) Howe of Taftsville; his fiance, Kathy Callahan of Springfield; several nieces, nephews and cousins. 

There will be no visiting hours. 

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Ronald Knapp scholarship fund in care of Brenda Blodgett at Springfield High School. 

The Davis Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
