George Richard "Dick" Whitman, 69 of St Albans, passed away peacefully Sunday Aug. 2 2015 at home with his wife by his side.
He was preceeded in death by his parents, Gordon and Lucy Whitman of St Albans.
Dick waa a 1964 graduate of St Albans High School, where he earned All-State honors in baseball, basketball, football and track. He went on to earn his Bachlor of Arts degree from West Virginia University. He played football all four years at WVU as defensive back.
Dick had a long career with the Kanawha County school system as a teacher and coach. He coached at DuPont High School, where he won back to back state championships and retired from Riverside High School. He is the most successful football coach in Kanawha County. Recently the St Albans Little League season was dedicated to the Whitmans.
Dick spent his summers doing construction with his lifelong friend, Donnie Lerose.
Dick was an avid golfer and loved spending time with his friend on the Greenbrier River.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Sharon; son, Rick and daughter-in-law, Jessica, and their children, Drew, Avery and Jackson and son Jeff, and daughter-in-law, Mandy, and their children Kaylee and Maci. Also surviving are his brother, Gordon Lee and wife, Christina, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He will be greatly missed by family, friends and former players he was privileged to coach.

Dick was a great guy and a very unassuming person. He was liked and respected by so many people as witnessed by probably 400 or more visitors at his wake on Wednesday night, 8-6-15. I stood in line for 2 hours and 10 minutes to pay my respects to his family. Lots of family and career photos were shown at the wake. Farewell my friend and classmate.
