George Howell '66 (1966)

I went to grade school and high school with Gary, its so hard to believe he is gone ( just saw the post today 12-16-10 ).  I want to replay a story about Gary that typifies my experience with the big guy. Since we were freshmen in HS, it was a rite of passage to smack each other in the arm for whatever reason.  When Gary hit you it was double or triple what any other human being could do ( he didn't know he was just twice as big and three times as strong as anyone else ).  After four years of bruised arms from Gary, we had an assembly for a Bob Segar ( that's right the one you know ) concert in the gym at the end of the year. The gym was crowded and the only seats left were on the rolled up bleacher seats ( about 9' off the gym floor ).  My girlfriend and her cousin ( 250 pounds ) were trying to get into those bleachers and Gary was along side of us as we tried to push the cousin up that 9'.  It wasn't going to happen.  Gary was next to us and I grabbed him and said " Gary you owe me for all those bruises over the last four years, GIVE HER A BOOST UP THERE.  He gave me a death look but pushed her up by the butt as my girlfriend and I pulled from above. Gary whispered to me after he came up that he would  kill me if he ever saw me again. I'm so sorry I never saw him again. I've repeated that story many times and as I married that girlfriend, it became part of our family lore.
