Loraine Thorn

Loraine M. Thorn, 92, died peacefully on Saturday evening, January 19, 2013 at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit after complications from a stroke.  She was born on May 7, 1919 in Detroit, the daughter of Raymond and Fidelia Stehlin.  Loraine grew up on Detroit’s east side and graduated from St. Martin Catholic High School in 1936.



Loraine began working at Buhl & Son’s in Detroit as a secretary.  On May 3, 1941 she married John (Jack) Thorn at St. Martin Catholic Church.  When the new couple started their family, they moved and Loraine became an active member of St. Juliana Church where she was a member of the Church Council, the Finance Committee and the Altar Society.  When her children were older, she went back to work at National Bank of Detroit as a clerk and finally at St. Joan of Arc Church in St. Clair Shores as their school’s tuition bookkeeper.  She retired in 2005 after 18 years at St. Joan.



Loraine was an avid bridge player and played at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial, the Grosse Pointe Woods Community Center and with the St. Joan of Arc Seniors.



Loraine is survived by her children, Barb Carrette (Len), Sr. Jackie Thorn, O.S.M., John Thorn, Linda Thorn and Patty Evans (John); six grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her husband Jack in 1980.
