Well we are about to meet soon and celebrate our 60th on September 19. 72 years since we showed up in the first floor of the original three story school. I realize that many of our classmates spent their early years elsewhere before joining us toward graduation however as I stroll through the years it may jar memories nonetheless. First grade with Miss Lemke was fun with our reading groups, gym time playing drop the handkerchief, Lanny’s leap off the roof of new construction and our move to a new classroom mid-year. Miss Lemke was sweet loving young teacher who was just the ticket to get us off to great start. Grade 2 gave us Mrs. Longworth who was about our height but definitely had eyes in back of her head. No nonsense allowed and forced me to report D on report card for Conduct actually meant Delightful. Grade 3 with Miss Widmark was all about multiplication and I quickly learned best place to check for answers was Marlyn’s work. Grade 4 with Mrs. Bronkow was good for the most part with mistletoe at Christmas party. Grade five was initially a surprise for some of us were placed in a split section involving half fifth and half fourth graders with Miss Zibuzar while the rest of you spent grade five with Mrs. Williams. It was not a fun year for me but were some good memories. Problem was Tom Pederson constantly slamming my books shut each and every time he passed by until I finally decided to end his shinanigNs and of course it became an all out fist fight not well received by our teacher. I would call it a draw for our arms got tired. We were sent to the elementary principal who was of course the sixth grade teacher. Our job was to spend the day removing floor scuffs with toothbrushes while the sixth grade class including the likes of Ralph Pearson found our presence to be most entertaining. Grade 6 put us with Mrs. Stewart. I was quite apprehensive for she already had me cleaning her floor. All went ok but the roller rink fire did provide a distraction. Climbing our desks on occasional nuclear bomb drills were so reassuring at the time for we no idea them about total obliteration. I was glad to pass sixth grade knowing there was a history of many not being so lucky and true to form some of our classmates were held back. I never liked that. That’s my wrap on elementary and will try to do 7-12 before too long. Stay tuned. |

RE: Mike Wyatt Posted Tuesday, July 23, 2024 06:06 PM How exciting to start seventh grade with more than one teacher. Also meeting all the new classmates from Cedar and Bethel. Not fond of lady killer Taff but all good for he came attached to Sue. Homecoming parade with our own float, bonfire and snake dance. We hit the big time. Roller skating parties to Spec. Lake. Mr Pennsinger our science teacher in upper annex. For me I only lasted in his class the first quarter and was lucky enough to get a C. At start of second quarter Billy Watkins nailed me with a rock as we were headed to the annex and I of course retaliated as he hit the steps, he opened the door and my rock hit the teacher. Billy and Don O’Conner were hung up to rat out the culprit but both were silent, I confessed and was kicked out for the year. Principal Sooger had me do all science assignments in the library and regardless of my best efforts, I got a big fat red F on every one. Good news is with my first quarter C I received a final grade of D-. Good we had Miss Olson as our math teacher and she was a sweet kind lady and a great teacher. I recall a particular purse fight ending in chaos when teacher was gone from the annex. I was attempting to repair Marlyn’s purse when all got quiet and Mr. Yovetich got me by the neck and elevated me to his level asking if I was the class clown? That scared me. Another recollection is pulling Bev Grants ponytail and after she warned me several times she unloaded her fountain ink pen all over the front of my white shirt. Grade 8 was relatively uneventful but do recall Billy and Mary fogging up windows of bus returning from skating party. Also the time Mr. Nelson read Ginger and Todd’s note aloud in class. I didn’t like that invasion of privacy. He was later our guidance counselor who told me to forget college and stay on the farm. Several years later Todd and Ginger had a cool party with several classmates and she had also invited Mr. Nelson. He eventually came up to me and asked what I was doing. I told him I worked for the school district. He looked more than shocked when I told him I was the middle school principal. Grade nine is coming up next but I need a break right now. |

RE: Mike Wyatt Posted Sunday, August 4, 2024 04:51 PM Big time freshmen. Lots of new classmates. Many from Crown. Really some superb and dedicated teachers and coaches all through high school. Fleming, Gilbertson, Schulz, Yanke, Mobley, Fosvedt, Estrem, Nelson, Yovetich, Perkins, Baker, Stone, Bromen, Yovetich, Melby, Hubbard, Foley, ….. We were very fortunate. Lots of great memories. Carnivals in the gym, selling candy for lighted field which never materialized, proms, plays, sports and clubs. Homecoming always big deal with game and all festivities. Sure recall our senior bonfire and Don and Claudia being our king and queen. Excellent choice. We won one FB game but it was our last one so we were on our way but season ended too soon. Ricky, Don, and Barry were core of super senior BB team with Ricky, Barry and Don as core but void created due to Byron having moved. Interesting times as I was kicked out of wrestling tournament our Junior year along with Pete and Gary for I drove us to Osseo and Mr. Yanke was not happy. On another occasion as sophomores Don, Billy and I took a day off and went to state fair of course me at the wheel. Next day Billy ahead of me in admit slip line. Mr. Hubbard questioned Billy’s fourth time at his grandparent funeral. Without hesitation and with a stone cold face Bill responded asking if he had any idea the number of times his parents had been married? I have to give a big shoutout thanks to Ms . Mobley for getting me into a lead of Jr. class play. Big help in years which followed. Sure looking forward to August 19 and hearing everyone’s memories. |
