John was one of the nicest, sweetest people I've ever met. He was a good friend all through our years at JBS. He was a good dancer, and I always appreciated his willingness to dance with me at any event where dancing was an option!

After Burroughs graduation, John went to Carlton College in Minnesota. Although he loved the school, he transferred to M.I.T. after only one year. to pursue academic interests in architecture and city planning. In 1968, John graduated from M.I.T. with a Bachelor of Science degree in urban studies from the School of Architecture and Urban Planning. Several years later in 1975, John was awarded a Master of Regional Planning degree from Cornell University Graduate School in Ithaca, New York.
Virtually all of John's professional life was spent working for the cities of New York and San Francisco in their departments of urban planning.
Apart from his city planning career, John's major interests in life were art, travel and family. Throughout his much too short life, John amassed a modest art collection gathered during his frequent and extensive world travels. No matter where he was in the world, he always stayed in touch with his sister Margaret and brother Mike and his family, especially his beloved niece Alexandra and nephew Michael. John never married.
John died in October 1985. His many professional colleagues and personal friends, as well as his brother’s family have missed him for a quarter century now. He remembered John Burroughs in his will with a substantial gift in memory and appreciation of Gaylord Montgomery who, John always believed, taught him to think.
