Greg and I attended many Cardinals' games at Sportsman's Park, often went bowling at Tropicana Lanes on Clayton Road, and, I believe, took in some Billikens' basketball games at Kiel Auditorium.  I enjoyed meeting Greg's mother at their home in Ballwin.

Greg was an excellent driver.  One day Mr. Acker began our English class by saying he happened to have been behind Greg on the drive to school that morning and that he was impressed with Greg's driving skills.

Most impressive was Greg's towering intellect.  He soaked up knowledge like a sponge.  His abilities and interests were not limited to math and science but extended equally to the verbal disciplines.  A subtle wit went along with this.  I value highly my memories of Greg.

I went to one school dance with Greg.  He was shy, didn't talk much, but he did bring me a beautiful white orchid with a yellow center as a corsage!  I have never forgotten that!

In six years at JBS I don't believe I shared five words with Greg.  It's a feature of adolescent socialization that cliques form, people are excluded, and most feel anxiety.  I witnessed that as my children were growing, and it brought memories of insecurity and anxiety at JBS.   At the 25th I was nonetheless surprised to hear how many of my classmates felt the same.  "So he/she was miserable too?" I thought.  Greg suffered from that, or at least did not have the security of popularity.  Someone who contacted him for the 25th told me Greg had no interest in attending and no good feelings for JBS.  He was an exceptionally smart kid, but until reading John's note, I did not know that Greg dropped out of Princeton his first year.  Perhaps he carried the JBS unhappiness to college.

I'm sorry I won't see him again.
