Kathie Kercher Horman. I am married to Chuck Horman, a Civil Engineer who has made a career of Real Estate Development and Property Management. We dated while he was completing his graduate degree at Stanford and I was a new school teacher in the area. We have now been married 42 years, and have made our home in Sandy, Utah. This is a bedroom community near Salt Lake. We have four married children and ten grandchildren. Fortunately, they all live nearby.
Life after School
I have a B.A. degree in music with an emphasis in piano performance. I also have an elementary education teaching certificate. I was a school teacher in the Bay Area of California prior to marrying Chuck, and taught school for a while in the early years of my marriage in Salt Lake. How do you retire from being a stay-at-home mom? My greatest accomplishments are my four normal, squared away, educated, civic-minded children who still love me.
Just after graduation, I visited my grandmother in Salt Lake, and decided to attend the University of Utah. Upon graduating and receiving my teaching certificate, I taught school in San Mateo, California. Since marrying Chuck, we have made our home in the Salt Lake area.
My spare time activities are: Designing gardens, showing horses all over the country, snow and water sports including scuba diving, quilting and reading. I have served on many boards dealing with the Arts. These include serving as president of the Utah Symphony, Ballet West, Utah Opera and our two local regional theaters, the Tony Award winning Utah Shakespeare Festival and the Pioneer Theatre. I am passionate about the arts. We own a condo in Sanibel, Florida and one in Deer Valley, Utah, but don't use them as much as we would like. Chuck and I love traveling and have been in many strange places. We found out after returning from Papua New Guinea that the World Health Organization listed it as the most dangerous place to visit because of infectious diseases, and the State Department discourages travel there because of extreme danger. Since we made it out in one piece, we had fun, and saw men wearing gourds in private places and nothing else.
My biggest surprise was to find I am not immortal and indestructible. I suffered a head injury on a scuba diving trip to Fiji and ended up with a sub-dural hematoma and spent two months in the hospital following brain surgery. Just imagine learning to walk again at my age.
Since my accident I have been working hard on my bucket list, and have done almost everything I really wanted to. My life has been great, and complete. I am working on my balance, and hope to learn to walk normally so people don't think I am drunk.
My experiences at Burroughs gave me resolve and confidence in myself.
I was born with perfect pitch, and just to torment Mr. Weinrich I would sing slightly off key in choir. He knew it couldn't be me, so he blamed those near me. Sorry! I loved Christmas at Burroughs, and was excited to find out who would design the Manger scene and sing the senior solo. The art classes were superior and I helped support my family when we were first married by selling my oil paintings. (I wish I had kept some of them now.)
Who would have known 50 years ago what would happen to any of us? I lucked out and have had a wonderful life.
