Allan Moran

Allan Moran

Allan Alden Moran, age 84, of Mound, died of natural causes in his home on February 10, 2025.  Allan was born in Minneapolis, MN on October 8, 1940.  Allan and wife Linda Moran were married on September 17, 1966, and settled in Mound, MN.  Linda was the daughter of a life member of the US Air Force, and moved often from one base to another.  When she and Allan settled in Mound, she had Allan promise that they would not move, ever.  For his entire career, Allan drove round-trip daily from Mound to Minneapolis to work, in honor of his agreement with Linda, not to ever move!

Allan was preceded in death by his wife Linda Moran in 2011, who succumbed to a long battle with cancer,  and his parents, Virginia Stumne Moran, and Alden Moran.  Allan is survived by his sons, Kyle (Erin) of Phoenix, AZ, and Colin (Julie) of Boise, Idaho. He was a loving Grandpa to Quinton, Shea, Nekolas, and Marisol.  He is also survived by his sisters, Kay (Peter) Elliasen and Jinx Engstrom, his sisters-in-law, Lori (Jim) Staley and Beth Roberts, and many nieces and nephews.

Allan graduated from St. Louis Park High School in 1958.  He attended the University of Minnesota for two years following graduation and then entered and served his country in the U.S. Navy for two years.  Following his navy experience, Al volunteered to serve in the Hennepin County Water Patrol, servicing the Lake Minnetonka area.  This experience vaulted him into pursuing a career in law enforcement with the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Department.  During his county law enforcement tasks around Lake Minnetonka, he was once in a helicopter that crashed down inadvertently, after hitting some elevated wires, and he suffered some injuries that hospitalized him for a month.  He nevertheless dedicated his life thereafter to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Department, where he moved up the ranks to second in command.  He ran the Hennepin County Jail for many years, and retired as Chief Deputy Sheriff in 1998.

Al’s two sons, Kyle and Colin, eulogized their father at the funeral.  They both proclaimed that their father was an extraordinary “dreamer” who was always open to learning new things, including the history of our nation.  During every summer’s vacation rode trip, Al would stop at every historical marker, and insist that his boys learned what had happened in that area.  We said of Al, in our high school annual, that he was “born idle, to dream his life away.”  How prophetic it was of us to make the same observation of Al in high school that his sons made of him as they talked of their lives in their eulogies.  His sons credited Al with teaching them “how to be a man” as well as how to be a dreamer.

Funeral services took place at St. John's Lutheran Church, 2451 Fairview Ln, Mound, MN on February 26, 2025  starting at 10:00 am with a pre-service gathering, then a celebration of life service at 11:00 am, and a luncheon that followed. Interment will be in the St. John's Lutheran Church Memorial Garden Columbarium, date to be determined.  Contributions may be made in Allan's memory to St. John's Lutheran Church, 2451 Fairview Lane, Mound, MN 55364.
