Smart. Smart. Smart. Especially in math. I remember he was very conservative, quiet, and a serious student. He would surely wig out if he knew I stopped balancing my checkbook about 35 years ago; figure if there's an error the bank will notify me.
I knew Al very well. We double dated at the senior prom. We entered the University of Illinois in engineering at the same time but he had difficulty adjusting to the college experience so he dropped out after one year. I think he couldn't get over his homesickness. His parents had a child who died as an infant so, I suspect Al and his brother were raised to be very close to home. Al was a thoroughly pleasant guy....not a nasty bone in his body. Al might have had mixed feelings about attending college because he had a business concentration in high school, not college prep. At some point in time he moved to Ohio but I don't know more than that.
Sorry to hear of Al's passing. We went all through elementary school together. Al was always shy around people he didn't know well, but around us friends, he was more himself: great sense of humor, and a pure heart. And what a math genius! Wow, could he process fast in his head what the rest of us had to work out on paper with much confusion. I remember he liked to experiment with building stuff and electrical equipment. He tried to teach me a few times, but all I did was get shocked or screw up the soldering of the electrical wires. A gentle, good hearted person.
