James (Jimmy) Bernard Chalkey, age 65, of Streator IL., passed away peacefully at home October 2, 2025, surrounded by the love of his children and family – a quiet farewell for a man whose life was anything but ordinary.
For more than fifty years, Jimmy stood proudly beside his father at Chalkey’s Tavern – not just learning the ropes, but helping shape a place where stories were shared, friendships were forged, and laughter echoed through generations. The tavern was more than a business; it was a living testament to the bond between father and son, and to Jimmy’s unwavering belief in the power of community.
Together, they carried forward a nearly 100-year legacy of a neighborhood tavern where patrons were more like family than customers. Jimmy’s dedication made him a fixture of comfort, loyalty, and belonging. His presence filled every corner of the bar, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him.
Jimmy was a man of quiet strength and simple joys. He found peace in the rhythm of nature – casting a line into still waters, gliding across rivers in his kayak, or watching deer move gently through the trees. Music was his constant companion, always playing softly in the background, a soundtrack to a life well-lived.
His faith and family were the anchors of his heart. A devoted member off his church, Jimmy lived with humility, kindness, and a deep sense of purpose. He was known for his encyclopedic memory – able to recall scripture, historical facts, birthdates, and favorite drink orders with ease. His words, often laced with humor or quiet insight, left lasting impressions.
Jimmy is survived by his children: Justin (Kellsie) Chalkey, James Chalkey, and Natalie Chalkey; and his cherished grandchildren: Ella, Drake, Emerson, and Lincoln. He also leaves behind his father, Jim Chalkey, and his siblings: Lori (Gene) Cornelius (Bourbonnais), Tina (Jeff) Baggett (El Paso), Becky Chalkey (Streator), Kim (Bob) Harms (Streator), Jennifer (Troy) Harcar (Streator), Sheri (Jim) Keith (Gurnee), and Dean (Cati) Chalkey (Streator).
He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Sharon Chalkey.
Jimmy’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew him. He was proud of his roots, devoted to those he loved, and generous with his time, his stories, and his spirit.

To everyone: “Joy and Peace for everybody’s life.”
And to Jimmy, we say: “Rest in Peace, Brother.”
