I grew up on Manzanita Street in Sunnyvale just four houses down from where Dave Christian moved in with his family. I I knew him from third grade on and we were great pals. In junior high we used to hang around with Drew Beck and Mike England who lived on Madrone Street, which was one street over from us. This friendship lasted throughout our days at Sunnyvale High and beyond. The four of us joined the Navy Reserves together on April 1, 1969. We all served at different duty stations, but kept in touch over the years, married, some had kids, and Life happened. In later years, the four of us and my Brother Tim formed what we called "The Old Farts Club" where we gathered at various restaurants for lunch and generally caught up on current Life events. We all had no clue that he was having Cardiac Bypass surgery and when we found out that he succumbed to complications in the Hospital, it was a horrible shock. To many, Dave appeared to be quiet and shy, but to those of us that really knew him, he was possessed of keen intellect, dry humor, and acerbic wit. When he let loose with one of his "Zingers", we would all look at each other, laugh our asses off and say "Whoa, where did that come from? RIP, Old Buddy, you're sorely missed and thought of often!

I think for all of us, when we lose a good friend or relative, it’s just really hard to imagine you will never see that person again – though time and good memories help. It was always good to see Dave and catch up and I will miss him. As Lynn Toschi mentioned in his comments Dave grew up about a block away from me so we went to the same elementary school (Morse), junior (Madrone), and of course high school. At some point we became friends then good friends and after high school we attended DeAnza Jr. College for 2 years then joined the Navy (Lynn Toschi's comments says a little more). After the Navy Dave and I went to Chico State. Dave eventually transferred and graduated from San Jose State, got married, had children, became a serious runner (even ran in the Boston marathon). After Dave started a family and moved to Livermore we continued to see each other occasionally (a card game here, a lunch there) and remained good friends - I have lots of great memories.
When iI wrote my above tribute about Dave Christian, Drew pointed out to me that I neglected to mention that SHS Alumni Bobby McKee is also a member of our "Old Farts Club". Sorry, Bobby, Senior Moment😄

We didn't hangout. He was quiet. I remember Dave as a great guy.
RIP
