Words from a Friend:

While I didn't know Dan very well in high school, we became friends over the past couple years. He was truly one of the sweetest people you would ever want to know and the world has suffered a loss at his passing. Dan, Billy Ray and I love you and we'll miss you! RIP, our friend. Laura K. Danny was my next door neighbor and the very first friend that I ever had.  He was at my house almost every day frequently sitting at the breakfast table with my mom ... often even before I woke up.  We spent many, many days playing together as little kids.  By junior high school, we didn't see each other much.  During high school, we basically just said "what's up" as we passed each other by in the hall or at a party.

Many years past until I ran in to him at O'Brien's Irish Pub one night.  We were in our early 40's then and I just happened to be with my younger brother Kenny who was also very close with Danny growing up.  It was a very happy reunion and we stayed in touch and spent time together after that up until he passed away.  As life often does, our busy schedules lead to about six months since we had seen each other when I learned of his passing from a sudden illness. I was devasted that I didn't get to see him, had let so much time pass again, and never got the chance to tell him I much I loved him.

I was able to attend his funeral and had the honor to be able to give his eulogy.  I spoke about our childhood memories together, how happy we were to re-connect after so many years, what a decent and kind man he was, and how much I cared about him.  I hope he heard it.  He called himself "Dan" from high school forward.  Those who had known him his whole life called him "Danny".  I never called him anything but "Danny" and I think he found that a little funny.  I miss my very first friend .... Danny ... very much.
