In Memory

Mozell Howie

I was sad to hear that Mrs. Howie passed away recently. I found the obituary that was printed in the Fayetteville Observer and have posted it below.

I have a lot of funny stories about  Mrs. Howie... remember when an airplane would fly over the building and she would duck and hold her hands on her head?  Remember when she said the ghost of her belated husband would come and visit in the classroom after the door would creak open? She may have been a little eccentric, but she was still pretty cool. :-)

Share a memory that you have of Mrs. Howie!

I will truly miss Mrs. Howie. She was truly a role-model for young people. Mrs. Howie enjoyed teaching and wanted you to learn something in her class and believe me she didn't just give you a grade. You would surely earn it if you took her class or you would fell. She was very serious about her work. I remember seeing her in Elizabethtown some years ago before moving to Myrtle Beach. She would ask me what I was doing and I told her that I was interested in going to graduate school and she encouraged me to stay positive and to continue in the field I was going and She stated that there was much success in the field I wanted to study. I will truly miss Mrs. Howie and the fun times I had in her class. May you rest in peace. My prayers go out to her dear daughter. She was the greatest and the Class of 1990 will truly miss her. Love, Jacqueline McClain

Melody Johnson (Frazier) (1990)

Mrs.Howie was very special to me. I remember sitting in her classroom and hoping she wouldn't call me to complete a formula Lol. It was so easy to get Mrs.Howie off subject and we did so everyday! Mrs.Howie became aware of what we were doing and she aborted our game. Every year Tarheel held a science fair. One year at the last minute I (Melody Johnson),wanted to enter. Just for fun I made a BRAIN (can you believe that in a science fair), zero effort was placed in this science project! When I came to class that day, Mrs. Howie as she so often did called me by my last name "Johnson". She said "Johnson I know your whole family, I know all the Johnson and I know all the Melvins so I don't understand you" Lol. Later during the year Mrs.Howie attended a funeral of one my family members. I had not a clue Mrs.Howie was watching me. I was assisting an elderly family member, Mrs.Howie walked up to me and said "now I understand you". This gave Mrs.Howie clarity but confused me even more Lol. For some reason after that day Mrs. Howie became one of my favorite teachers. Instead of me and my friends being called cock outs as she once labeled us, I became the very smart girl (don't ask me how)Lol. Two months after graduation I was in Elizabethtown and I learned Mrs. Howie lived only a few houses down from my biological mother. Mrs.Howie stopped me as I was walking and invited me inside (very clean home). I sat with Mrs. Howie for hours that day and she explained why she had a change of heart for me. Trust me when I left Mrs. Howie home I had an even higher level of respect for her. This lady considered everything about me, around me and refused to judge me. Mrs.Howie loved her daughter and talked about her late husband. This was a woman who loved and cared for her family deeply. While home in Bladen County I picked up the famous "Bladen Journal". In the obituary section Mozell Howie name appeared,I was devasted. I had not a clue she had been sick. I called my aunt and asked her why didn't she tell me. I buried my face in my pillow and I lost it. Someone I came to love so dearly crossed over into a peaceful place. I hope she gets an extra star in her crown just for loving and understanding me.
Mrs.Howie will always be loved and missed by me and many others.

Looking up to you,

Melody Johnson
