Wendell Newkirk....what can I say??? Wendell and I were not only cousins, we were the best of friends. Wendell and I have always been close, and although it has been almost 5 years since he past away, it still feels like yesterday. When I graduated from college and continued to reside in Durham, NC, Wendell was living there, and I remember when my car broke down, he came by my apartment everyday for over a month to take me to work and to pick me up from work and never charged me a dime. That's a true friend. I also remember one Sunday night Wendell, Tabitha Dixon Wilson and I were on our way back to Durham, we all were driving our own vehicles. We were rolling!!!! When we got almost into Durham, two state troopers stopped, Wendell, Tab, myself, someone driving a white Benz all at the same time and gave all four of us tickets!!!! (It's funny now but not then) The day that I heard of his death, I was at the nursing home in Wallace visiting my grandmother who was dying and whom Wendell kept in close contact with me about. I was soooo shocked!!!! The day of his funeral, I remember driving on I-40 coming in from Durham, and all that I could think was, I cannot believe that I am going to Wendell Newkirk's funeral. After the funeral, we all went to Felicia Kenan Boyles mom's house and celebrated his homegoing. Wendell Newkirk, you left a great impact on my life, and I will NEVER forget you. There are so many other things that I could say, but I don't have the time. So, all I will say is, "Love you, Wendell, and I miss you. RIP."
