It is painful for me to share the sad news of Ellen’s passing on April 5.I am filled with warm, deeply felt, memories of one of my best school pals. Throughout my growing up years, Ellen was an amazing friend, so brilliant, so kind, so supportive. From a young age, Ellen had substance. She was introspective and intuitive at a level beyond the ability of most high school kids.
I remember Ellen as a voracious reader. There was always a book in her hand. This passion of hers began early and she built on it over 30 years as co-owner of The Golden Notebook bookstore, a beloved institution in the center of Woodstock.Happily, Ellen recently found local buyers who will carry on her legacy by continuing to run it as an independent bookstore.
Ellen wrote a lengthy inscription to me on the inside cover page of our yearbook. Many of those thoughts have inspired me over a lifetime and have had a strong impact on the person I am today. Ellen helped me to know myself and others better. It was a gift for me to be her close friend, because Ellen didn't wait for the end of our senior year to express her loving thoughts, she let me feel them on a daily basis.
This is the caption under Ellen's yearbook photo:
"Genuine good humor is surely the flavor of a great mind and laughter the charm of a lovely face."
I had expected to see Ellen at our reunion in May.We always had such fun together.
