Grandma's Hands

Grandma, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench.  She didn't move, just sat with her head down staring at her hands.  When I sat down beside her, she didn't acknowledge my presence and the longer I sat, I wondered if she was OK.

Finally, not really wanting to disturb her but wanting to check on her at the same time, I asked her if she was OK.  She raised her head and looked at me and smiled.
"Yes, I'm fine, thank you for asking," she said in a clear strong voice.  I didn't mean to disturb you, Grandma, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK, I explained to her.

Have you ever looked at your hands she asked.  I mean really looked at your hands?

I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them.  I turned them over, palms up and then palms down.  No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point she was making.

Grandma smiled and related this story:

Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well throughout your years.
These hands, though wrinkled, shriveled and weak have been the tools I have used all of my life to reach out and grab and embrace life.
They braced and caught my fall when as a toddler I crashed upon the floor.
They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. As a child my mother taught me to fold them in prayer.

They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots.  They dried the tears of my children and caressed the love of my life.
They wiped my tears when my husband went off to war.
They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent.
They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold our newborn daughter.

Decorated with my wedding band they showed the world that I was married and loved someone special.

They wrote the letters home and trembled and shook when I buried my parents and spouse.

They have held children, consoled neighbors, and shook in fists of anger when I didn't understand.

They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body.

They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw.  And to this day when not much of anything else of me works real well these hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to fold in prayer.

These hands are the mark of where I've been and the ruggedness of my life.  But more importantly it will be these hands that God will reach out and take when He leads me home.  And with my hands He will lift me to His side and there I will use these hands to touch the face of Christ.

I will never look at my hands the same again.  But I remember God reached out and took my grandma's hands and led her home.

When my hands are hurt or sore or when I stroke the face of my children and husband I thank grandma.  I know she has been stroked and caressed and held by the hands of God. I, too, want to touch the face of God and feel His hands upon my face.

 Words of Wisdom

A family altar can alter a family.

A lot of kneeling will keep you in good standing.

Don't put a question mark where God put a period.

Don't wait for six strong men to take you to church.

Exercise daily ... walk with the Lord!

Give God what's right, not what's left!

Give Satan an inch and he'll be a ruler.

God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called.

God grades on the cross, not the curve.

God loves everyone, but probably prefers
"fruits of the spirit" over "religious nuts"

God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage.

Having truth decay? Brush up on your Bible!

He who angers you, controls you!

He who is good at making excuses is seldom good for anything else.

He who kneels before God can stand before anyone!

Kindness is difficult to give away because it keeps coming back.

Most people want to serve God, but only in an advisory capacity.

Never give the devil a ride! He will always want to drive!

Nothing ruins the truth like stretching it.

Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the ark.

"Pray" is a four letter word that you can say anywhere.

Prayer - Don't give God instructions - just report for duty!

The Will of God will never take you
where the Grace of God will not protect you.

This Church is "Prayer Conditioned"!

To be almost saved is to be totally lost.

WARNING: Exposure to the Son may prevent burning!

Watch your step carefully! Everyone else does!

We don't change the message, the Message changes us.

We set the sail; God makes the wind.

We're too blessed to be depressed.

Wisdom has two parts:
1. Having a lot to say
2. Not saying it

Worry is the darkroom in which "negatives" are developed.

The year is 1911  --- One hundred and one years ago.
What a difference a century makes!
Here are some statistics for the Year 1911:

***************************************

The average life expectancy for men was 47 years.

Fuel for this car was sold in drug stores only.

Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower!

The average US wage in 1910 was 22 cents per hour.

The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year.

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year,
A dentist $2,500 per year,
a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year,
and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births took place at home.

Ninety percent of all Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!
Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which
were condemned in the press AND the government as "substandard."

Sugar cost four cents a pound.

Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.

Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair once a month,
and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from
entering into their country for any reason.

The Five leading causes of death were:

1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke

The American flag had 45 stars.

The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was only 30 !!!

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented yet.

There was neither a Mother's Day nor a Father's Day.

Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read nor write and only 6 percent
of all Americans had graduated from high school.

Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter
at the local corner drugstores.

Back then pharmacists said, "Heroin clears the complexion,
gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels,
and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health!"
(Shocking?)

Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or
domestic help.

There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A. !

I am now going to forward this to someone else without typing it myself.

From there, it will be sent to others all over the WORLD -
all in a matter of seconds!

Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years!

Thank you,Dad and all those who serve and have served...

"When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21,I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years."

~MarkTwain

When God created fathers...

When the good Lord was creating Fathers he started with a tall frame. And a female angel nearby said,"What kind of Father is that? If you're going to make children so close to the ground, why have you put fathers up so high? He won't be able to shoot marbles without kneeling, tuck a child in bed without bending, or even kiss a child without a lot of stooping."
And God smiled and said, "Yes, but if I make him child size, who would children have to look up to?" And when God made a Father's hands, they were large and sinewy. And the angel shook her head sadly and said, "Do you know what you're doing? Large hands are clumsy. They can't manage diaper pins, small buttons, rubber bands on pony tails or even remove splinters caused by baseball bats."
And God smiled and said, "I know, but they're large enough to hold everything a small boy empties from his pockets at the end of a day...yet small enough to cup a child's face in his hands."And then God moulded long, slim legs and broad shoulders. And the angel nearly had a heart attack. "Boy, this is the end of the week, all right," she clucked. "Do you realize you just made a Father without a lap? How is he going to pull a child close to him without the kid falling between his legs?"
And God smiled and said, "A mother needs a lap. A father needs strong shoulders to pull a sled, balance a boy on a bicycle, and hold a sleepy head on the way home from the circus."God was in the middle of creating two of the largest feet anyone had every seen when the angel could contain herself no longer."That's not fair. Do you honestly think those large boats are going to dig out of bed early in the morning when the baby cries?  Or walk through a small birthday party without crushing at least three of the guests?"
And God smiled and said, "They'll work. You'll see. They'll support a small child who wants to ride a horse to Banbury Cross, or scare off mice at the summer cabin, or display shoes that will be a challenge to fill." God worked throughout the night, giving the Father few words, but a firm authoritative voice; eyes that saw everything, but remained calm and tolerant. Finally, almost as an afterthought, he added tears. Then he turned to the angel and said, "Now, are you satisfied that he can love as much as a Mother?"
The angel shutteth up. "Children's children are the crown of old men, and the glory of children is their father." (Proverbs 17:7).

When you thought I wasn't looking...

by a former child...

When you thought I wasn't looking...

I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator,
and I immediately wanted to paint another one.

When you thought I wasn't looking...

I saw you feed a stray cat

,and I learned that it was good to be kind to animals.

When you thought I wasn't looking...

I saw you make my favorite cake for me,
and I learned that the little things can be very special in life.

When you thought I wasn't looking...
I saw you make a meal and take it to a friend who was sick,
and I learned that we all need to help take care of each other.

When you thought I wasn't looking...
I saw you give your time and money to help people who had nothing,
and I learned that everyone can make a difference

When you thought I wasn't looking...
I saw you take care of our house and everyone in it,
and I learned the importance of FAMILY.

When you thought I wasn't looking...
I saw how you handled your responsibilities, even when you didn't feel good,
and I learned that I would need to be responsible when I grew up.

When you thought I wasn't looking...

I sometimes saw tears come from your eyes,
and I learned there are things that can hurt, yet it's O.K. to cry.

When you thought I wasn't looking...

I saw that you truly cared about people,
and I wanted to be everything that I could possibly be
to follow in your footsteps.

When you thought I wasn't looking...
I looked at you and wanted to say,
"Thanks for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn't looking."

Flag Day is June 14th!

For more than 230 years, the American flag has been the symbol of our nation's strength and unity. It's been a source of pride and inspiration for millions of citizens.  The American Flag has been the prominent symbolic icon in our national history

Here are some highlights of our Old Glory's unique past.

On January 1, 1776, the Continental Army was reorganized in accordance with a Congressional resolution which placed American forces under George Washington's control. On that New Year's Day the Continental Army was laying siege to Boston which had been taken over by the British Army. Washington ordered the Grand Union flag hoisted above his base at Prospect Hill. It had 13 alternate red and white stripes and the British Union Jack in the upper left-hand corner (the canton).

In May of 1776, Betsy Ross reported that she sewed the first American flag.

On June 14, 1777, in order to establish an official flag for the new nation, the Continental Congress passed the first Flag Act: "Resolved, That the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation."

Between 1777 and 1960, Congress passed several acts that changed the shape, design and arrangement of the flag and allowed for additional stars and stripes to be added to reflect the admission of each new state.

Act of January 13, 1794 - provided for 15 stripes and 15 stars after May 1795.
Act of April 4, 1818 - provided for 13 stripes and one star for each state, to be added to the flag on the 4th of July following the admission of each new state, signed by President Monroe.
Executive Order of President Taft dated June 24, 1912 - established proportions of the flag and provided for arrangement of the stars in six horizontal rows of eight each, a single point of each star to be upward.
Executive Order of President Eisenhower dated January 3, 1959 - provided for the arrangement of the stars in seven rows of seven stars each, staggered horizontally and vertically.

Executive Order of President Eisenhower dated August 21,1959 - provided for the arrangement of the stars in nine rows of stars staggered horizontally and eleven rows of stars staggered vertically.

Today our flag consists of thirteen horizontal stripes, seven red alternating with 6 white. The stripes represent the original 13 colonies, the stars represent the 50 states of the Union.

The colors of the flag are symbolic as well:

Red symbolizes Hardiness and Valor,

White symbolizes Purity and Innocence and

Blue represents Vigilance, Perseverance and Justice.

There were some other early versions of the "Stars and Stripes". A very popular one among them was,the first Navy Jack, used even before the country got its freedom. First used by the Continental Navy in 1775, it had the 13 red-white stripes with a rattlesnake overall, and the motto "Don't Tread on Me."

We all need reminders to Slow Down on occasion.....

Slow Down Therapy

1. Slow down; God is still in heaven.
You are not responsible for doing it all yourself, right now.

2. Remember a happy, peaceful time in your past.
Rest there.
Each moment has richness that takes a lifetime to savor.

3. Set your own pace.
When someone is pushing you, it's OK to tell them they're pushing.

4. Take nothing for granted:
Watch water flow, the corn grow, the leaves blow, your neighbor mow.

5. Taste your food.
God gives it to delight as well as to nourish.

6. Notice the sun and the moon as they rise and set.
They are remarkable for their steady pattern of movement,
not their speed.

7. Quit planning how you're going to use what you know, learn, or possess.
God's gifts just are; be grateful and their purpose will be clear.

8. When you talk with someone, don't think about what you'll say next.
Thoughts will spring up naturally if you let them.

9. Talk and play with children.
It will bring out the unhurried little person inside you.

10. Create a place in your home...at your work...in your heart...
where you can go for quiet and recollection.
You deserve it.

11. Allow yourself time to be lazy and unproductive.
Rest isn't a luxury; it's a necessity.

12. Listen to the wind blow.
It carries a message of yesterday and tomorrow-and now.
NOW counts.

13. Rest on your laurels.
They bring comfort whatever their size, age, or condition.

14. Talk slower. Talk less. Don't talk.
Communication isn't measured by words.

15. Give yourself permission to be late sometimes.
Life is for living, not scheduling.

16. Listen to the song of a bird; the complete song.
Music and nature are gifts,
but only if you are willing to receive them.

17. Take time just to think.
Action is good and necessary, but it's fruitful only if we muse,
ponder, and mull.

18. Make time for play - the things you like to do.
Whatever your age, your inner child needs re-creation.

19. Watch and listen to the night sky.
It speaks.

20. Listen to the words you speak,
especially in prayer.

21. Learn to stand back and let others take their turn as leaders.
There will always be new opportunities for you to step out in front again.

22. Divide big jobs into little jobs.
If God took six days to create the universe,
can you hope to do any better?

23. When you find yourself rushing and anxious, stop. Ask yourself "WHY?" you are rushing and anxious.
The reasons may improve your self-understanding.

24. Take time to read the Bible.
Thoughtful reading is enriching reading.

25. Direct your life with purposeful choices, not with speed and efficiency.
The best musician is one who plays with expression and meaning,
not the one who finishes first.

26. Take a day off alone; make a retreat.
You can learn from monks and hermits without becoming one.

27. Pet a furry friend.
You will give and get the gift of now.

28. Work with your hands.
It frees the mind.

29. Take time to wonder.
Without wonder, life is merely existence.

30. Sit in the dark.
It will teach you to see and hear, taste and smell.

31. Once in a while, turn down the lights, the volume,
the throttle, the invitations.
Less really can be more.

32. Let go. Nothing is usually the hardest thing to do -
but often it is the best.

33. Take a walk-but don't go anywhere.
If you walk just to get somewhere, you sacrifice the walking.

34. Count your friends.
If you have one, you are lucky.
If you have more, you are blessed.
Bless them in return.

35. Count your blessings - one at a time and slowly...

"People are often unreasonable and self-centered.

Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway.
If you are honest, people may cheat you.
Be honest anyway.
If you find happiness, people may be jealous.
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough.
Give your best anyway.
For you see, in the end, it is between you and God.
It was never between you and them anyway."

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK...
(and  maybe next week!!)

If you want happiness for an hour - take a nap.

If you want happiness for a day - go fishing.

If you want happiness for a month - get married.

If you want happiness for a year - inherit a fortune.

If you want happiness for a lifetime - help someone else.

Chinese Proverb

BE THANKFUL...

Be thankful that you don't already have
everything you desire if you did,
what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don't know something...
For it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times...
During those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations...
They give you opportunities for improvement.

Be thankful for each new challenge...
Which will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes...
They will teach you valuable lessons.

Be thankful when you're tired and weary...
Because it means you've given your all.

It's easy to be thankful for the 'good' things...
Yet,a life of rich fulfillment comes to those
Who are thankful for the setbacks.

Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive...
Find a way to be thankful for your troubles
And they can become your blessings.
