School Story
I was very involved with the Human Relations class that was developed by Earl Apgar. It was an idea well before its time. We explored diversity, poverty, prejudice, ecology and the environment, and much more. We did many things outside the classroom that would never be sanctioned today. He encouraged us to be free thinkers. Earl even sent me to interview the Reverend Floyd Rose, who was very involved in the Civil Rights movement, and I got to be on TV because of it. Best of all, I met my husband, Mike Keller, in that class. Bonus!!
I really enjoyed being in choir with Mr. McClure and Mr. David Carter. Mr. Carter was a fabulous teacher and a role model to many. From choir I progressed to our annual musicals and plays. I had some great roles, and we had a slew of talented singers/dancers that made our shows outstanding. I wish there was videos of those performances! Mr. Pat McDaniels used to smoke like a fiend in the auditorium during rehearsals and swear! He was a gem, though. I had a cast party at my house, and he showed up and had a scotch with my dad.
Looking back, high school had some big disappointments, but also some great times. I'm happy to say the best years of my life came well after I graduated... And really happy that we had NO social media!
